“Nothing but a lot of swelling and I guess it hurts quite a bit, but it’s not the worst injury I’ve ever had.  I washed it and everything, but I thought it would at least be a little bit better this morning, I guess I don’t know too much about animal bites outside of the ones I raise.”  He didn’t know much about a lot of thing, honestly, but he usually did pretty well just guessing what sort of things he needed to do to handle injuries that came up.  Matthew chuckled a little, ���He would, but he doesn’t have any other employees, so if I don’t do it, the animals will take over the farm.  I really appreciate the help though, I’m never going to get anything done if I don’t have the use of my hands…or if I get rabies and die, that would be bad too.”

“Okay that’s good, maybe it’s just infected.“ words she didn’t think she’d be saying today. “this reminds me of some words of wisdom from cherie parker, peroxide for outer wounds, chocolate cake for inner ones and alcohol’s a 2-in-1“ daphne recited fondly. “If you die i’d be happy to feed the animals.“ she specifically said feed, since she knew he did so much more and she wasn’t about to commit to milking any cows or building any furniture.

Matthew had a deep seeded distrust for doctors, though he was aware it wasn’t their fault, he’d been raised to believe they weren’t to be trusted and even after all these years he avoided it whenever possible.  He was glad he’d called Daphne as she was someone he’d known for a long time and he knew he could trust her and that if she through a raccoon bit was bad enough that she was already in her car, he was going to listen to her.  “The dog brought it in the house and apparently my options were to let it grab my hand and just shake it off outside, or adopt it as a pet, and I have enough animals.”  He’d been a bit concerned, but that was amped up a little with how worried she sounded, “Well, it’s really swollen and it’s painful, it’s hard to move my hand.  My temperature is up a little bit too, but it’s under 100, so I think that might just be because I have a cold, it’s probably unrelated.  Don’t worry too much though, I can survive another twenty minutes, you don’t have to speed, I’ll be alright, I just can’t afford to keep missing work, I already lost most of this week thanks to my table saw getting destroyed, I need my hands working.” 

she got her phone connected to bluetooth so she could have her hands free while driving “you’re being awfully cavalier about this.“ daphne sounded amused but it was mostly disbelief. his tone did calm her though as she didn’t want to seem frantic over the phone, her speedometer didn’t read as calm and collected however. “no foaming at the mouth or vomiting?“ she asked, not knowing much on the subject of rabies besides what she’s seen in pop culture. luckily mapleview wasn’t very high in traffic, she’d only be a few more minutes at this rate. “i think your boss should allot you some sick leave for this one“ she teased pointedly, his work ethic obviously a detriment to his health.

Easy S2E4 | Spent Grain

It had been a bad week for Matthew.  Someone had broken into his workshop and stolen his homemade table saw and though the police had found it, it was too used to be sellable and it was seriously damaged when he got it back.  He spend all week restoring it and getting it back into working condition, and when it was finally back to working condition, he’d gone back to his house to find out his dog had somehow caught a raccoon and let it into his house, so he spent the next two hours trying to catch it and get it out, and while he eventually managed it, he’d managed to get bitten in the process. 

He’d washed the wound and gone to bed, but when he woke the next morning it was very sore and swollen, and as if all that wasn’t enough, he’d woken up with the beginnings of a cold as well.  He tried to ignore it and get back to work, but after taking care of his animals, tending the garden, and spending three hours in his workshop, he had to admit that he was going to need some help today.  

He didn’t drive, and his hand was in such bad shape he didn’t feel up to riding his bike, so he called the first number that came to mind, “Hi, I’m sorry to bother you but… just a second.” He turned away from the phone to sneeze twice into his fist and then went back to the phone, “Excuse me.  It’s a long story, but I got bitten by a raccoon yesterday and I think I might need a ride to the hospital, would you be available at all today or tomorrow, maybe?”

daphne had been running around all day packaging online orders and restocking her new autumnal candles that seemed to fly off the shelf in the past week. she burned herself a few times with hot wax but it wasn’t anything she wasn’t used to by now, all while manning the storefront’s occasional customer. she had just flipped the open sign on the door to closed, so she could grab a very late lunch when her phone rang. pleasantly surprised by the name on caller id, she picked up with a smile. “hey there!” It slowly fell however forming a look of concern as matthew didn’t sound too good. “oh my god matthew those things carry rabies!” she rushed into her small kia, balancing her phone between her shoulder and her chin “tommorrow? are you kidding? i’m on my way.” her lunch could wait, she had a bag of trail mix in the car that could hold her over. “what are you feeling symptom wise?” she asked pulling out of her parking space with some speed.

“ a cow bell ?? is he getting a full orchestra ?? “ she asked, confused and concerned for her fellow campers. mia wasn’t too fond of sing-alongs. not only was she tone deaf, but most of the chosen songs were not up to par. she also wasn’t quite a huge fan of mayor levi either, but she made the best of what she could. sing-alongs may not have been part of the plan, but greeting people was. “ daphne, right ?? “

“an orchestra? no i think he only plays instruments from the town hall lost and found.“ daphne joked glancing between her and the water. “right, and you’re mia?“ it wasn’t as much a question as a statement, she knew of mia from her work in the misses and over all reputation. the brunette had thought about joining the misses a few times but it never seemed to fit in her schedule. “nice to officially meet you“

mia was sitting near the lake with a roasted marshmallow on a stick that was in her hand. it was times like these where she felt like she could reflect on things and really sort things through. an added bonus was missing the second round of copacabana in one night. speaking out to anyone who was near, mia figured she’d give fair warning. “ i decided to come here after that absolutely atrocious first version of copacabana. do you know if that second round is still going on ?? “

great minds obviously think alike considering when daphne decided to escape to the lake front there was a blonde already there. Instead of ignoring her she decided to take advantage of the bizarre situation they were thrown in. daphne chuckled at mia’s words “he’s added a few extra choruses and pulled out a cow bell so i’m going to say it’s still going strong.” the brunette answered taking a less than graceful seat due to the two wine coolers she had and the third she just started. unfortunately she wasn’t drunk enough to enjoy the single song concert so she left.

what are your top three favourite candle and soap scents?

“ooookay it’s always changing depending on my mood but im going with lemongrass and cotton, that’s one, berry basil and my comfort candle is white tea and oak.“

when did you first discover your sexuality?

“ooh good questions, so I grew up in an amazing family who made it a priority to have conversations about sexuality and kind of normalize it because it was unavoidable having two mamas. My first attraction was to a girl in my fifth grade class so I kind of assumed I was a lesbian like my moms. being a lesbian in grade school, can’t say it was fun and i wasn’t the most popular for it but my moms made it all okay. it wasn’t until eight grade when I had my first crush on a boy and he took me to formal and my moms were supportive of that too so i guess that’s kind of how it happened.“

favorite candle scent?

“now that it’s spooky season i’d have to say our new witch’s brew candle, it’s a lavender and sage candle with subtle notes of rum and tobacco.“

“like it? i LOVE it.” and her statement is true, no exaggeration. the eucalyptus is a nice touch, she almost wants to stand around and smell it for a while. “did you make it yourself?” and now paris is curious. “because if so, i’d pay you to make me something similar.” the already present smile on her face continues to grow. there’s nothing more she loves about daphne’s shop than the seasonal scents, and of course she’s expecting to be FIRST in line to rack up on pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. “that’s the best thing i’ve heard all day, I just LOVE your soaps, well, really, everything in your shop is a must have, but fall themes? you really know how to win a girl’s heart.”

“oh good, i didn’t want anything too commercial or kitschy.” daphne said with a sigh of relief. “uh yeah with some scraps from the display bouquet“ at least once a week she went to the farmers market and stopped by the flower shop to replenish the vase behind the cash register. it was a little tradition she had since opening the store. “how about you get the flowers and i’ll teach you? it only lasts a week max, unless you get foliage that looks good dead, or air plants might work“ daphne was a not so secret plant hoarder, her shop full of little houseplants that spilled from her collection at home. “i’m so glad to meet someone who loves fall more than me“ daphne held the door open with a smile as she invited paris in “i’ve got a pot of coffee brewing, it’s not pumpkin spice but it’s definitely more than i should drink alone“

daphne was hanging an autumnal wreath on her store front made of real eucalyptus and warm colored flowers, it made the surrounding six foot radius smell wonderful. paris’s cheerful tone made daphne smile “so you like it?” she chuckled stepping away to see her handiwork. “i just hope we don’t run out of pumpkin spice candles this year.” daphne laughed  “we just came out with some new fall themed soaps if your interested. ”

a sweet sigh of SATISFACTION escapes her lips as she takes a breath of fresh air. “isn’t it LOVELY?” paris beams. “fall is in the air my friend, and i’m already closet deep with new decorations for my room and everything smells like pumpkin spice around my house.” sometimes her cheeriness is SICKENING. it’s no secret she’s been waiting for summer to end and for fall to begin. her favorite season, and she’s more than happy to share her love for it with anyone willing to listen. @mapleviewstarters​
