Surrealism

surrealism was a cultural movement that began in the 1920s that still has a lasting legacy today. their aim was to litigate thought and blur the lines between reality and dreams/subconscious thought. The first surrealist manifesto was published in 1924, the text included poetry and literature and showed that surrealism was not just restricted to the arts. some of the most well known surrealists are Salvador Dali who did the most commercial work of any surrealist and it was said he would do anything for money, Man ray who was a big contributor to the Dada movement, and his “Duchamp’s Fountain” was voted the most influential artwork of the 20th century and Andre benton who is best known as the founder of Surrealism.

Charlie Devoli and Eugenia Loli are two examples of popular modern surrealists. Devoli uses iPhone apps to create impossible landscapes and scenes and posts them on his Instagram page. Loli is a collage artist that does similar things but wish more flowers and stars.

Humans Relationship With Photography

Susan Sontay said “to take a photo is to participate in another persons mortality” which relates to how we use the same words for the actions of both a camera and a gun, load, aim and shoot. although nower days you don’t have to technically reload your camera. today tho there is a desires to take photos that ‘look old’ people buy old cameras just for the aethstetic and there are actually apps to make your photos look old or like they were taken on a film camera, there is a premium value on the old.

Cyberspace

Cyberspace is the term used for the imaginary physical space that we think of when we hear ‘the internet’ or ‘the web’. The term Cyberspace was first used in the 1980s by cyberpunk science fiction author William Gibson. His works inspired films like Tron The Matrix and Blade Runner which all furthered the idea of ‘online’ being a physical thing.

Now we have internet art, which often has no physical form as it only exists online. websites such as thisisnotaplace.com and putitonapedistal.com are slowly taking the place of traditional galleries. artists are even using social media as a platform to actually create art. Amalia Ulman is said to have created on of the first Instagram ‘masterpiece’, she started posting pictures of her ‘new life’ in LA and took her followers (eventually 89,000) on a ride through break up, becoming a “sugar baby”, getting a boob job, drug use and eventually rehab before eventually announcing that her project was over and it was all faked.

What Does It Mean For A Building To Become A Ruin

Ruins and abandoned buildings have become a subject of interest, people enjoy adventuring into the unknown of a crumbling dusty abandoned building. Even online there is a large audience for people who film themselves exploring these buildings, youtubers such as TGF and Joe Weller are some good examples. On Instagram also there is #ruinporn which has over 24,000 posts. Now we also have folly which people put in their gardens which are fake ruins, new sculptures and small buildings made to look old. Cyprien Gaillard is an artist that used this concept of ruins in his work.He made a pyramid of beer crates and let the public attack it and drink as much as they wanted, he took pictures before and after to show the destruction.
