Lessons Learned
After having finished this assignment I have a couple of things I would do differently if i could start again.
The first one is break down the steps. I really struggled to make any progress on the video because I was looking at the video as a whole and getting stressed out. In future I think I should break down the basic steps to make the assignment more manageable in my mind
The second one is filing. Not actually for my pc filing but for my after effects and illustrator files. In both instances my layers were all over the place and this definitely slowed the process or making the assignment. In the case of illustrator, if I had set up my layers correctly to begin with, I may have been able to easily import all my assets into after effects in one go as opposed to one at a time.
Dont Put off the research! Getting an idea of what is expected and what else is out there is paramount to making sure the assignment is completed on time and to a higher standard. I'm terrible with this one, I always do the bare minimum of research to begin with and i have little to no idea what is going on until later in the term and I have far less motivation and fewer ideas to go on with.
Overall I am happy with my end result. It was a struggle which makes the final thing even more special. I am happy with the way i continued the style of the type book without repeating too much and the way the words and phrases were all tied together with the design and motion of the video.

Here we have the reference video I took of a book falling due to too much weight on one end.
In the final video to get the accurate looking motion of the book wiping across the screen, I copied the motion of the real book with my designed frame by frame.
i also use a tape measure to make the book fall. There was no particular reason for this apart from the fact that it was close by and weighed enough. - Riveting stuff i know xD

Here is the setup I used to get pictures of the assets.
the top left image shows how I propped up the paper and positioned the light behind it. The light behind the paper didnt work as intended but it ended up getting me a nice paper texture so i count that as a success.
the top right image is showing the main light that I used to light up the book and wood texture. It is a bright light primarily designed to mountain bike at night, but here is has been strapped to a tripod and popped on a chair to give it the easy extra height to get a nice front on light. Normally I would use a diffuser (something like baking paper) stop the light from being so harsh but in this case i wanted nice hard edges and clear shadows and highlights.

In the process of making the video i needed reference material, so I made a little set with a white background and a wooden table and a book. At this stage I had already settled on having all these assets in the video so all I needed to do was to get reference from the real world.
In the process of setting this up I attempted placing a light behind the paper to make a nice clean white background. This unfortunately did not give the desired effect, but what it did do was make the texture of the paper pop, so I took a couple of photos of the paper lit from behind.
I didn't really have any plans to use this asset in the final product, but after going through and editing the shot, I decided I really liked it, so i tried it in the video. I felt it really worked with the literata - literacy - books - paper theme I had going on in the first section of the video.
The wood grain also features in the table below the book. This one I did intend to use from the start as wood grain is a difficult pattern to do well and I didnt have the time to spend to make a good looking wooden table asset.
the book clearly features though I did overlay the cover with the colours from my type book to intergrate it properly with my video.

Design Thinking
The main focus of my kinetic type video is the waikato river. 'Ko Waikato Te Awa' my river from my Pepeha. Along with the flowing water style pattern I wanted to make everything point toward the river. To do this the aim was to make everything flow together seamlessly like water which is why I went for the moving transitions that I did.

The book flipping from the weight of the text came from my playing around with after effects. The first time I opened the software I wanted to practice animating something so I animated a ball falling and catapulting the word literata out of the frame.

After my original research I started to plan out a series of keyframes. I tried to base it on the style and themes from my typebook. I took inspiration from some of the patterns that i used previously along with some of the animations and motion graphics from my research.

I did a bit of research during and after class at different types of kinetic type. I liked different parts of each one. Some of them had cool motions like the 'hello world' and 'classic typo' while i liked the way the type merged or worked with the photos or videos in ones like 'dream bigger' and 'perspective'.
Motion Array was a good spot to go for inspiration.
