Book Recommendations
Hello friends! So I like to read, and thought I would share some books that I have thoroughly enjoyed over the past few months. I’m dyslexic, but still found these books compelling and acessable so would really recommend for anyone. Slight disclaimer, these books are often sexually orientated or contain explicit bits, so be warned!
1. The Girls by Emma Cline
Tumblr media
The Girls, set in 1969 follows Evie Boyd, a forteen year old girl who gets swept up into a Charles Manson-esk cult. This book is such a page turner, narrively switching between a modern Evie, retroactivly remembering the events of the summer, and young Evie as they happen. The coming of age aspect of the book, is strangely relateable, even with the extreme setting it takes place in. Evie is flawed, yet sympathetic, complex and easy to understand. It’s a very easy read, and if you are interested in cults, cannot recomend enough. Also a Wolf Alice song is based on this book so thats a massive sign that its awesome.
2. Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman
Tumblr media
If you love the film, you’ll love the book. Call Me By Your Name is a romantic story between seventeen year old Elio and his fathers house guest, Oliver. The senual language of the book create a dream-like narrative, which reflects the idilic Italian summer the book is set in, as well as the lust and confusion felt by a teenage boy. This book is beautiful, if you want to feel like you’re falling in love, give it a read. I cried a lot. I know a lot of people have a problem with the age gap, but you sort of forget about it because the two charaters are so compellingly written, you just want them to be happy.
3. Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
Tumblr media
Alias Grace is based on the true story of the murderess Grace Marks. Set in 1890 in Canada, Grace Marks retroactively recounts her life story. Do not be put off by the size of this book, it unbelievable. Margaret Atwood is a fantasic writer, I mean you’ve most likely heard of The Handmaids Tale, but this novel is just as good. The life that Atwood injects into Grace is remarkable, and forces you to constantly question her innocence. This book is sexy, funny, heartbreaking, and centres around one of the best female charaters I’ve ever read. It’s just wonderful, and if you think, yikes that looks a bit too heavy for me, Netflix has made an adaptaion, which is so well created and acted and is so true to the book so check that out instead. I cannot rave about this book enough.
4. The Power by Naomi Alderman
Tumblr media
Wow this book. This book is bloody cool. I finished it yesterday so the hype is real. Okay, so, women have developed an electical “power” that they are able to generate from their hands. For the first time women are physically stronger than men, and the book follows the narative of multiple charaters as their lives change due to this shift. The book follows a historical account-like structure which makes it suppperrrr compelling because you want to know what happens next. As I said before, I’m dyslexic, so read very slowly, but I finished this book in 3 days. I will say that this book has divided some of my friends and my mum’s friends into those who love it, and those who hate it, so approach with an open mind. But yes, great concept which is well executed fantastically.
5. Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge
Tumblr media
A Non-Fiction book! Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race is a great. It’s writen by a Londoner named by Reni Eddo-Lodge, and focuses on the problems in England surrounding race, and white perseption that everything is ‘fine’. I loved this book because it includes a large proportion of British history, that I had no idea about. If you’re a feminist, grab this book!
Whoooooop thanks guys! If you have any recommendations for me I would love to hear from you. Maybe we can start a bookclub or something. Stay groovy kids.

Today I found out that yarners think crocheting socks is subversive and controversial and I just…on one hand, why the fuck not, I guess yarners are allowed to have their controversies, but on the other, how much time do you have in your FUCKIN DAY??
