This morning there was a nation-wide text spam campaign targeting Black Americans (largely students) telling them that they’ve been selected to pick cotton and will be picked up to be sent to a plantation after Trump’s inauguration.

People online are making jokes about it, but it’s genuinely a disturbing sign. Someone was emboldened enough to intentionally run a background on thousands of young Black people and send them racist messages the day after a very exhausting and stressful election.

I take way too long answering questions because I go through the math of “what am I supposed to say? what are they expecting to hear?” instead of just answering.

like someone asked if my broken leg was better, and I had to go through my L from death note internal monologue of ‘well, they saw me walk in with no limp. the easy answer is yes. but that’s untruthful since it still hurts to walk on it. I could explain that a bone callous forms over the course of months to seal the break and then it takes over a year for that callous to remodel back into a proper shape. and that in the meantime the deformed bone causes agitation to surrounding tissue. but that’s such a lengthy explanation when they’re expecting a one word ‘yes’. but then what if later on I have to mention how I still can’t do certain activities, they’ll say ‘what do you mean, I thought you said it was healed’. a one word answer would be akin to a lie, and living in a castle of lies is dangerous. you’ve been staring at them for thirty seconds now, you look like you’re on the verge tears, just commit to something, for the love of god.’

and then I say “yeah, well, you know. takes a while. but yeah. or, not really, but enough.” and the hairdresser pointedly abstains from talking to me for the rest of my mullet cut.

My "get the room clean by cleaning one thing every time I stand up" agenda continues well. It's good to feel productive rather than helpless. I mention this because I just swept under my sewing table, which produced, among many other things:

from one chronically anxious person to another: the world is not going to go up in flames. What happens will be more slow, more bureaucratic, more boring. There is no catastrophe to end all catastrophes, no rapture, no sudden end. You can't give into the call of the void, because there is no void. So you just have to do the work to make tomorrow a better place, anyway. Because that's how it gets better.
