when: sunday, december 27th, evening where: jesse’s apartment who: damian & @jesse-aarons (mentions of @jamisonfm) warnings: n/a
Jesse was a ball of mixed emotions. He'd just kissed Reign, and although yes, she'd freaked out at first she had then kissed him back. He felt good about them, positive about something for once, and it was what he needed after all the drama with Damian and his brother. And speak of the devil, there he was on his couch, just as he'd said, as Jesse walked into his apartment. His expression dropped and he crossed his arms as he met his ex-best-friend's eyes. "You're not," he said, in response to their previous texts. "You're a dickhead, and you're lucky I've had a nice time out or I'd be in a much worse mood right now."
"Am too." Damian resisted the urge to stick his tongue out, and instead sunk further back into the couch. "You had a good time without me? What the fuck? You're not allowed to do that, we've talked about this, Jesse." If Jesse really had gone off and made a new bestie, what was he supposed to do? He didn't like a lot of people, making a new best friend wasn't something he was remotely interested in.
Jesse shrugged off his coat and threw it at Damian on the couch, moving to sit down in the armchair opposite from him. "Well then how about you stop having a good time with my brother? Maybe then we can discuss who I can and can't have fun with."
Damian tossed the coat off his lap and sighed, scowling back at Jesse. "I finally meet a guy who's hot, rich, and hung, and you can't even just be happy for me? So much for being my best friend, dude."
Jesse glared back, crossing his arms as he leant back. "You're disgusting, I don't need to know about my brother's dick. This is why I don't want you fucking him. I don't want to think about that. You don't just fuck your best friend's sibling, Dami. It's fucked up."
"So you're mad at me when I don't tell you, and mad at me when I do tell you? I can't win!" Damian huffed. His anger towards his friend was mostly from guilt, knowing he'd fucked up with Jesse, but he'd never exactly been great with admitting when he was wrong.
"I can't believe I have to deal with this," Jesse muttered to himself, running a hand through his hair. He stood up, unable to sit still as he shook his head again. "I'm mad because you're meant to be my best friend. Jamison isn't meant to be a part of that, he isn't meant to be that person to you! And either this is going to go to shit and you'll hate each other, putting me right in the middle of it, or it goes well and you get married and both fucking forget I exist."
"I..." For once, Damian thought his words over carefully, rather than just trying to attack the other person in the conversation. Jesse was one of the few people in his life he didn't want to see hurt. "I'd never forget you exist, J. You're my best friend."
"You say that now," Jesse shot back, hurt clear in his eyes. "But frankly, I don't know if I believe you." He knew he was likely being a bit harsh, that he'd probably blown this a bit out of proportion, but he was hurt and honestly, scared of potentially losing his best friend.
"It's not... it's not like I went out there trying to hurt you, okay?" Damian swallowed the lump in his throat and stood, uncomfortable with the seriousness of the conversation. Confrontation was something he enjoyed, generally, but not when it was like this. "I just... I don't... feel things like that for people often. Usually I just feel like I'm playing relationship, even when I'm not getting paid for it. With him, it felt... I don't know. Real."
Jesse faltered at that, clenching his jaw as he looked back at his best friend. He stepped closer, tilting his head and searching Damian's eyes as if to see if he was being honest. "So what? It's not just fucking?" he asked, voice quieter, less confrontational.
"I don't know." Damian shrugged, crossing his arms over his chest. "I mean, it's ending before it even had a chance to begin, so... I don't know what would have happened. I don't know how he feels about me."
Jesse's expression softened, and he felt the guilt eating away at him a little now. He wasn't used to seeing Damian like this, even as his best friend, he knew he didn't like letting his walls down. "You could have told me you felt like this, Dami..." he murmured.
Damian just shrugged again, trying his best to force the heat rising to his cheeks to go away. "It's stupid. And you know I don't like talking about this kind of stuff. I'm not some... stupid little schoolgirl, that gets unreciprocated crushes on people."
Jesse rolled his eyes at that, reaching for Damian's hands finally, giving them a squeeze as he tugged his friend to sit back down onto the couch. "You don't gotta be tough around me, Dami. Everyone has unrequited crushes, even if they don't admit it. And... and maybe it's not unrequited. Like, he-he agreed to be your date, right?" It wasn't easy for Jesse to just put it aside, but he also didn't like seeing Damian upset in any way.
Damian let Jesse pull him down, despite the urge to shove him away, and settled back down into the couch once again. "It doesn't matter anyway. I'll figure something else out. There's tons of people out there who'd love to be my date."
Jesse bit at his lip, sliding his arms around his best friend and dropping his head onto his shoulder. He sighed softly, "There are," he agreed quietly, not sure how to fix this. He wondered to himself what Jamison was thinking about all this, whether it meant something to him too or if he was planning on fucking around with Dami and leaving him. Something about that thought made Jesse angry, and he tightened his arms around him. "You deserve better than Jami, anyway," he mumbled quietly. "Don't tell him I said that."
A bit hesitantly, Damian lifted his hand, pushing his fingers through Jesse's hair. "I don't think I could handle better than Jamison. Not unless I wanted to get torn in two."
Jesse pouted at that, lifting his head to rest his chin on Damian's shoulder so he could look at him. "I can't believe you actually like my gross brother," he admitted, "Of all people, you decided on that brat?"
”You think he’s a brat?” Damian looked back at Jesse, his face scrunching in confusion. “When I’m your best friend?”
"I guess you're both kind of brats," he mumbled, smirking a little at Damian now. "Perhaps, me included in that too," he finally admitted, biting at his bottom lip. "I didn't mean to be a bitch. I just don't want to lose either of you."
Damian was quiet as he looked away, staring down at the floor and chewing on his lip, trying to figure out the best way to go about everything. Sure, he liked Jamison, like... kind of a lot, especially after this afternoon, but Jesse was his best friend. They'd been through a lot together, and he couldn't lose him. "Yeah." Pulling away from Jesse, he stood suddenly, grabbing his coat and tugging it on. "I've gotta go... feed the cat."
Jesse sighed and slumped back as Damian pulled away, crossing his arms as he watched him get up to leave. “Fine, be like that. But I- I support your happiness or whatever. Just know that I warned you and you’re not allowed to forget I exist.”
"I don't think I could if I wanted to, with the way you nag me all the time." Damian rolled his eyes and zipped up his jacket, smoothing down the sequined fabric. "Farrah's present for you is on your kitchen counter. She told me not to peek, but I'm assuming it's something animal printed. Just keep it in your closet, and wear it if she comes to visit - maybe post a picture on Instagram, if it's not too embarrassing. It'd mean a lot to her."
Jesse huffed but smiled slightly at that, nodding. "This isn't the end of this," he told him, lifting a hand to point at his best friend. "And thank you. I'll send her a message to say thanks too."
With another, more dramatic roll of his eyes, Damian left, allowing himself to be upset for about five full seconds, before pushing it away. He wasn't about to sit and pine over some guy he couldn't have. He was too much of a catch for that kind of thing.
