Y’all made the worst possible takes of thresh and reaper like did we both read the same book/movie? Thresh and reaper are some of the few tributes who didn’t kill senselessly thresh is only ever mentioning killing the girl who killed rue and wouldn’t stop bragging about it and spares katniss because she protected and buried rue. While reaper I don’t think even kills anyone only goal protecting his district mate and little wovey, and even gives the people who tried to kill him their own burials. He’s only aggressive towards capitol and rightfully so. Like black boys irl they were forced to grow up so fast because of their cruel governments and forced into protective man of the people roles. district 11 boys are the few tribute boys outside of 12 given any sort of sympathetic writing and martyr deaths in the hunger games.

Something else I hate, re: Suzanne Collins’ unconscious stereotyping, is how Gale is referred to in more “adult” terms, while Peeta (the most common example) is more often referred to as a boy or in terms that indicate how young he is. The books make a point of saying Gale was tall and already looked like a man at fourteen, and he’s constantly being referred to as “handsome” “manly” “masculine” or “too male,” while he’s still a teenager. (all examples lifted from the books) Yeah, kids can be tall and also look mature for their age at a young age, but to make a point of saying a kid already looks like a man at fourteen years old is…uh, odd. Combined with how Suzanne Collins describes other kids who are non-white such as Thresh and Reaper, both being described as tall, muscular and brooding/quiet, it’s a pretty damning pattern. Slap Gale’s face on Thresh and you won’t change much about how their personality/physicality is initially described. Meanwhile for example; Peeta is given terms like “the baker’s boy,” “boy with the bread,” “boy from district twelve,” and is constantly being addressed as a boy by Haymitch and other characters, Katniss included. He’s almost always referred to in terms that reflect his age. So why not characters like Thresh and Gale and Reaper? What sets them apart, that they get to be singled out as being “adult?” Gale is a boy too, he’s a fucking kid. He was four-fucking-teen when he met Katniss. Fourteen. There is no reason for the liberal use of the word “manly” around him.
