we neither wanted nor deserved “Nothing New” in 2012 because ”everyone loves an ingenue” but insecurity is terribly unattractive unless it’s in a fragile, vulnerable, manipulate-able, girl. definitely not in a platinum pop star who just needs to get over herself and realize she has everything and it’s just terribly unattractive of her to act like people don’t love her and she doesn’t have everything. She just wants attention. She’s being silly. Silly girl (derogatory), because she’s not a girl anymore, she’s a woman, and it’s just terribly unattractive.

And so they released “The Lucky One,” because it was the safe version of the same fears, cleverly disguised as a little morality tale about fame, no whinyness, no portrait of a “girl” who’s really too old to be this insecure. “Nothing New“ stayed safely in the vault.

And that decision, that tactical move, that belied the truth of the song. She was RIGHT to be afraid. She was RIGHT to feel like they wouldn’t love her when she’s nothing new. Because she couldn’t be herself anymore.

I’ve always said that the world is a different place for the heartbroken. It moves on a different axis, at a different speed. Time skips backwards and forwards fleetingly. The heartbroken might go through thousands of micro-emotions a day trying to figure out how to get through it without picking up the phone to hear that old familiar voice. In the land of heartbreak, moments of strength, independence, and devil-may-care rebellion are intricately woven together with grief, paralyzing vulnerability and hopelessness. Imagining your future might always take you on a detour back to the past. And this is all to say, that the next album I’ll be releasing is my version of Red.

Musically and lyrically, Red resembled a heartbroken person. It was all over the place, a fractured mosaic of feelings that somehow all fit together in the end. Happy, free, confused, lonely, devastated, euphoric, wild, and tortured by memories past. Like trying on pieces of a new life, I went into the studio and experimented with different sounds and collaborators. And I’m not sure if it was pouring my thoughts into this album, hearing thousands of your voices sing the lyrics back to me in passionate solidarity, or if it was simply time, but something was healed along the way.

Sometimes you need to talk it over (over and over and over) for it to ever really be… over. Like your friend who calls you in the middle of the night going on and on about their ex, I just couldn’t stop writing. This will be the first time you hear all 30 songs that were meant to go on Red. And hey, one of them is even ten minutes long.

hey guys psa regarding hospital bills

don’t just pay it. do not automatically pay the hospital bill when you receive it. call your health insurance provider and POLITELY say, “excuse me, i just received a bill for $1200 for my hospital visit/ER visit/etc., is that the correct amount i’m supposed to pay?” because hospitals bill you before your health insurance and they will take your money no matter how the amount due may change based on your health insurance looking at it. 90% of the time, if your health insurance is in any way involved in the payment of that bill, you do not have to pay as much as the hospital is billing you for. call your health insurance provider first, and POLITELY request clarification, always remember that the person you are talking to is human and this is just their job, and then you will very likely find out you actually only owe $500.

don’t shout at anyone about it, don’t get mad, just understand that this is The Way Things Are right now and call your health insurance provider before paying the bill your hospital just sent you. there’s a chance the hospital bill might be correct, true, but call your health insurance provider.
