New Look for Converse
With an iconic logo, Converse is recognizable all over the world. But with it being summer it is okay for a fresh new look. With a modern update to the logo they were able to combined their sub-brands to become one and I think that this is a clever move. It's important that the logo was still recognizable because Converse is such a large company. I can't wait to see how the company continues to grow and conquer the world.

A New Identity for ASICS
ASICS wanted a new look for them and who was there to help them, Bruce Mau Design (BMD). BMD's goal for ASICS was to make the brand express the love that the company and the audience has the love for all sports. As you can see the brand now has vibrant colors and the logo is the center of attention. The logo is simple and bold across all applications of the company. You can see this is their lookbook as well. I am a huge fan of the new look for ASICS. I wore their shoes growing while I was running and I always knew that I could count on them. Now with this fun and bold look to the company it makes me want to go buy some shoes.

Trippy Menus Are Liberated
What is a better way to advertise your pizza shop by allowing local artist to show their work. The design agency BooneOakley took on this challenge. Mellow Mushroom is the pizza place that wanted their menus to reflect the locals and have lots of fun with it. As you can see all the menus are different and unique. This is such an important aspect of designing because not only do you want your menu design to be legible but you also want it to be fun and interesting. These artworks are all different and have their own twists. This is what makes this project unique and very entertaining. I wish I can see these menus in person. The menus are 6 pages and 20"x9" (open).
Creative credits go to the artists: Andrew Archer, Melbourne; Aldo Crusher, Mexico City; Olaf Hajek, Berlin; Jon Reinfurt, Audubon NJ; and Mark Ward, London; as well as to BooneOakley creative director David Oakley; design director Eric Roch von Rochsburg; art director Laura Beebe; and copywriter Mary Gross.

TOP 5 DESIGN TRENDS OF 2017
Every year, Behance releases a list of the top design trends sweeping the industry. Their list is very extensive and quite impressive so I have pulled the Top 5 to share with you. The full list is linked below if you’d like to take a deep dive but this is a great jumping off point for anyone looking to jump into the latest and greatest.
1. SEMI FLAT DESIGN
In the past few years flat design ruled the web design market but now, influenced by Material Design, it is becoming more dimensional. This transition begins with some light shadows, making it a semi flat design. The evolution of flat design from a minimalist style suits the new developing technologies. Flat design is still in, but it has undergone some improvements. The smooth shading adds a depth and complexity without destroying the flat design feeling. This is a new feature added to the flat trend and will continue to evolve in 2017.

2. CINEMAGRAPHS
Cinemagraphs aren't the regular gifs we see all around the web. Cinemagraphs are still images with minor elements moving in them. This technique makes a simple photo more realistic by bringing it to life.
3. MORE 3D
3D is definitely heading  our way and we are going to see its influence in all design fields. With the VR/AR revolution rapidly building momentum, this domain is evolving pretty fast.
4. ANIMATION
Animations are more and more present in web design and they can be gifs, SVG, WebGL CSS or videos. Animations were definitely one of the biggest things in the last year's web design trends, so don't hesitate to use them.
5. LANDING PAGES
In 2017 we will see a rise in landing pages due to their potential for marketing purposes and their ability to better target visitors.

LIFEWTR Packaging Series Features Female Artists
What a time to be alive. LIFEWTR is a series that features upcoming and talented female artists. This makes me so happy and it is very encouraging to see that there are females making an impactful mark on the earth. Using packaging as a way for exposure is a clever way. I must say Pepsi did good on this project. The packaging project that just came out is the second series for this water. This time they are showing American and UK artists. The bottles all have different concepts but all unite by empowering women. Trudy Benson focuses on texture, bold colors and shapes. Lynnie Z focuses on mysterious characters. Adrienne Gaither focuses on exploring imagination and identity. These wonderful women have encouraged me to continue to push through all my daily struggles with design and to continue to practice and believe.
“We’re proud that the LIFEWTR Series 2 labels will feature designs made by some of today’s most talented emerging female artists,” said Todd Kaplan, vice president.

Making My Hand Lettering Digital
As a graphic designer typography is a large portion of the job but hand lettering is an art all on its own. I’ve always enjoyed hand lettering and done a majority of my work with traditional means (pencil and ink) then taking that into Illustrator and/or Photoshop. Recently I decided to go in, on an iPad Pro, as I wanted to take my work to the next level and start working purely digitally. The next issue was finding the right App. As I was doing my research I noticed that the majority of incredibly experienced artist were using Procreate. And that’s when I knew that was the app for me.
The amount of tools and customizations on Procreate are comparable to Photoshop but made perfectly for use on iPad and using the Apple Pencil. It easily allows me to go from the sketching phase to the final product. It also allows for easy adjustments to the overall piece with the ability to work in layers. An essential part of hand lettering and calligraphy is the ability to create thick and thin lines which is handled well and makes the transition to digital very easy.
A great bonus to this app is the ability to easily record your work and do a time-lapse video of your drawing process. It is very fun to go back and see how you developed a master piece.
youtube
Procreate is a paid app and will cost you $5.99 but it is definitely worth it if you’ve been looking for a great app to do some professional level digital art on the go.

iOS 11 Beta Released For Designers
iOS 11 has been released in beta with several key features aimed at creative professionals. The iPad Pro was able to win over designers and creative with it capabilities but Apple looks to continue that with this new update which is slated to be release in Fall of 2017.
The new Files app allows you to be organize everything on your device while also connecting all of your cloud service; like iCloud, Dropbox and even Adobe Creative Cloud. You can now work where ever you are.
With the huge success of the Apple Pencil the new iOS looks to implement it even further with the new Instant Notes feature. This feature allows you to start drawing or note taking from the lock screen, and save directly to your Notes app, great for quickly jotting down an idea.

Twitter Redesigns App with Bold Typography
Last month Twitter announced an update for their mobile app which is aiming at redesigning features to allow for a cleaner UI for their users as well as a redesign to their typography. The type has been updated to add an additional level of consistency across the board by presenting a definitive hierarchy for a clear read for their user. The stand out to this is all of the header or headlines have been made bold to focus on what’s happening right now.
In addition to the typography they have also changed the profile pictures to a round display and update the icons for your ways to engage with the tweets. They also introduced a new side menu to eliminate tabs and clutter. The update also moves to create a more unified look for the app across all platforms. This is was primarily done to make an easier interface for users who are new to Twitter and allow them ease in navigate of the app and better interact with other users.
Full list of updates is below
What's New: ● Profile, additional accounts, settings, and privacy – all in one place! A new side navigation menu and fewer tabs at the bottom of our app = less clutter and easier browsing. You told us you loved this change on Android last year and we’re excited to now bring it to iOS. ● Links to articles and websites now open in Safari’s viewer in the Twitter app so you can easily access accounts on websites you’re already signed into.* ● We’ve refined our typography to make it more consistent, and added bolder headlines to make it easier to focus on what’s happening. Also, rounded profile photos make it clearer to see what’s being said and who’s saying it. ● More intuitive icons make it easier to engage with Tweets – especially if you’re coming to Twitter for the first time. For example, people thought the reply icon, an arrow, meant delete or go back to a previous page. We switched to a speech bubble, a symbol most know and love. We also made the icons lighter for more seamless interaction. ● Tweets now update instantly with reply, Retweet, and like counts so you can see conversations as they’re happening – live. ● Additional accessibility choices such as increased color contrast and the option to always open supported links in Safari Reader view.

How dainty can a line be?
Hand lettering has always been an interesting way of design. As a design student I have always been a huge fan of typography. There has always been a unique way that defines each character and that has captured my attention. Hand lettering is the next step for me and will allow for me to design and create typography in a unique way. This of course is a hobby but practice makes perfect and this is something that I believe in. I choose to achieve my goals and take it to the next step. I want to discover my creative juices that are with in me. As I look back in the past few weeks I appreciate what my friends have helped me learn. Design is a way of life for me. Developing this new skill will help me become a better designer. Dainty Lines is an outlet for me to design and develop on a daily basis. To see the world through typography. I am excited to see the outcome of this year and see my process. I hope to empower people who just like to doodle or just simply love type. Let me know if there is a phrase or a word that you think that I should hand letter. I will give some personality or style to words. I am excited for this journey. The journey of TYPOGRAPHY!
