Here we have a few booklets for the London Zoo, featuring Children’s art. Lovely drawings and lovely Machin panes! ...and a coupon for discounted zoo admission! Too bad it expired in 1988!

Spotlighting a few more Machin booklets... Here we have a series of six “...illustrations by John Ireland on commercial vehicles.” All contain two 1p, three 8p, and three 10p Machins. However at least the sixth booklet in the series can also be found with two 2p, two 8p, and three 10p Machins. Again each has “mirror” pane versions, giving at least 14 different versions to collect!*

Here we have a series of six booklets featuring “illustrations by Basil Smith on Veteran Cars...”. There are three different panes to collect...or rather six if you are super-particular and a compulsive completist like myself, with each pane having a mirror image...giving a total of 12 booklets to collect!

Here we have a very interesting souvenir booklet commemorating the Plymouth Philatelic Society issued for the 58th Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, an annual assembly that continues to this day. Inside we find a brief history of the club and six 1-1/2p “Charcoal Grey” and six 2p “Greenish Grey” Machins!

Here we have a few brown stitched booklets featuring mail trucks and vehicles. They contain nine 2-1/2p “pale magenta” and five 1/2p “turquoise” Machins. I do love the clever advertising bits on the selvage! (I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. I have the supposed new and improved iPhone but I’m not exactly satisfied with the camera...the pictures seem to have a dull quality to them. Likely due to the my poor ambient lighting in my office! Oh well...

For this 50p light blue Machin booklet Royal Mail dispensed with the art altogether and went straight for the advertising! Inside we find ten 3p “Ultramarine,” seven 2-1/2p “Pale Magenta,” and five 1/2p “Turquoise Blue” Machins. At least the selvage advertised a dealer of stamps!?

Here we have a few 50p decimal Machin booklets. They are light blue in colour (difficult to tell this in the photos) and feature flowering plants. Another unusual grouping of stamps: ten 3p “Ultramarine,” seven 2-1/2p “Pale Magenta,” and five 1/2p “Turquoise Blue” Machins. I suppose to offset the charitable Oxfam advertising, Royal Mail compensated with the Esso Petrol advertising? One has to admire the bad puns however: “Tear Off to Esso...” and “Lick battery failure...” Not bad for 1971!

Here we have some early decimal Machin booklets. These feature post boxes and fashions through the ages. Dig the hip 1972 styles! These contain a beautiful assortment of Machins: two each of the 1/2p “Turquoise Blue,” 1p “Crimson,” 1-1/2p “Charcoal Grey,” and 2p “Greenish Grey.”

Here we have a rather generic booklet containing six 4d predecimal Machins. They can be found with both “Olive Sepia” and “Vermillion” varieties. Another interesting aspect is the orientation of the stamps as sheets were formatted and placed sideways in the booklets. Note the advertising in the selvage as well. Later when we look at the sheets in detail, we will discuss the various collectible varieties!

The explorer booklets also came in a purple colour booklet with six 1d “Yellow Ochre,” six 3d “Spectrum Violet” and twenty-four 4d “Olive Sepia” Machins. Doctor Livingstone, I presume...?”

The predecimal green booklets feature famous explorers. The reverse again featured advertising for Oxfam. They contain panes of 5d “Stewart Blue,” 4d “Vermillion,” and mixed panes of 1d “Yellow Ochre” and 4d “Vermillion” Machins. These mixed panes are a personal favorite of mine. Visually they are attractive and they provide opportunity for many tagging varieties. For now I will continue to feature many of the booklets and we will showcase the individual panes afterwards.

The £2 Edinburgh Castle definitive was issued as "Blue" in 1988. This photo does not do it justice, it is a very beautiful blue!
