Sorry for being inactive, I have some news.

I had to drop out of Japanese in order to go into a different program. While I am sad - I am also very happy! I do not think the stressful way of learning Japanese was right for me.

The way a course is set out did not help me learn Japanese. When working on my assignments, I wanted to learn some more vocabulary so I learned some descriptive words. Unfortunately, I was marked badly for this because while I DID use all that we were taught, I also tried to do some learning on my own which isn't the point of the class, which I understand. Also due to it being a "class I have to pass" I didn't really have time to dedicate to going over things I still didn't understand or take my time with things I found confusing (I have trouble remembering hiragana and katakana still, so it makes everything very difficult). So I left class feeling lost still.

Most of the students in my class already had a good grasp of the language as well. A lot of my classmates were Chinese and admittedly already knew a lot, so being in an environment where I had to be partnered with someone who was already very good definitely did not help me or my confidence.

I still would love to learn Japanese, but I need to seriously consider how I will do it. Has anyone had experience with external language schools? I don't believe I'd be able to self-study well without a mentor. I just worry that I'll need to graduate or get good marks when all I want to do is just learn, mistakes and all, without being punished.

I will still put in the effort to speak and learn Japanese.
