Born on this day in 1827 was Joseph Lister, President of the Royal Society from 1895 to 1900, and pioneer of antiseptic surgery. His work provided the foundation for the basic principle that bacteria must not be allowed to enter wounds during surgery.
Applying Louis Pasteur's germ theory of fermentation on wound putrefaction, he promoted the idea of sterilization in surgery using carbolic acid (phenol) as an antiseptic.
