I am embarrassed to even ask for help and you all know that in almost 7 years of having this blog, I've never asked for anything, but my university is changing my major from next year on and this is the last chance I have to graduate and take my last semester.
Before the change announcement, due to my current financial situation I planned to take my last semester next year, but if I don't take it now, I will not be able to take it ever again. My only option would be to start all over from the first year on, and the five semesters that I already successfully took and paid off would be worth nothing and I would not be able to finish the course.
I'm a some 1.5k euros away from being able to pay it all off, and I don't have that money right now, even with my paycheck. Both of my dogs have had health issues in the past month and the vet visits wiped us out.
If you can help, please do. I appreciate every contribution. I totally understand if you can't, so please don't feel bad about it. Every reblog and share is appreciated and is very helpful as well.
I'd like to thank everybody who already contributed. You all are amazing and incredibly kind and have helped me beyond words. I'm really speechless at everybody's grace and kindness towards a virtual stranger on the internet like me.
You've all already changed my life for the better these past 6 and a half years. Sometimes I felt so lonely and sad and all of you were my only support systems and I could never thank you enough for that. I love you all, thank you.

I love this and feel that the Alliance would very much implement this to keep the more ‘useful’ soldiers where they want them.
Fire the headcan(n)on: Problems with long-term management of biotic resources for maximum strategic potential in the Alliance military
It is obviously not ideal* for a ship's CO to be running risky ground missions, but the issue demonstrated by Commander Shepard actually brings to light a larger dilemma that's been discussed within the upper echelons of the Alliance military for years. Biotic personnel are a huge asset as front-line troops, and any still able-bodied biotic moving off the front lines is considered a net loss. This poses a potential retention problem, since the usual route for advancement would remove them from where they're considered most valuable.
A trail of internal communications dating back over a decade (recently acquired by Westerlund News) documents how the Alliance instructed recruiters to push biotics to enlist (with exorbitant sign-on bonuses) rather than attend school for a commission.
It's worth noting that when faced with a similar recruitment-and-retention problem for pilots, the Alliance chose to offer commissions, while technically-skilled Specialists can be brought in as officers or warrant officers, depending on their pre-military career and level of education.
Alliance military doctrine suggests preventing a "Shepard Problem" not by restricting a biotic CO to their ship, but by making sure they'll never command a vessel in the first place. If at all possible, biotic personnel should not be given the opportunity to advance to senior command positions until they are physically unable to serve on the front lines.

You may have seen my other post going around about how we're on strike. Well, the university is choosing to cut our healthcare in addition to our pay, which means we have some time to get on COBRA, but the bills just got a lot chunkier.
While I am comfortable drawing aliens, especially Mass Effect aliens, mechs, anthros, and furries are not my strong suit.
If you'd like to help out, I'm opening 5 slots for symmetry portraits. There's absolutely no pressure to support monetarily, but reblogs and boosts would be much appreciated! Solidarity forever!

Rebloging to remind myself to address this is my fic.
Help me figure a thing out from the lore: how does the heatsink clip work into the weapon? By that I mean, from where is it inserted to how can it even fit every gun?
It doesn’t make sense to me because not only there doesn’t seem to be a dedicated entrance and exit for it (save rare exceptions, but even those don’t help), the reload animations doesn’t really help figure it out. Plus, the size of the clip is never explained… how can an universal design fit and take the required heat load from very different gun types, sizes and heat production!
Take the Carnifex, how can the clip be inserted like a modern pistol when there doesn’t seem to room for it, given the size of the grip, and then be ejected from the center of the top barrel, which by the way is right under where an optical sight might go? Same goes for the N7 Valkyrie but worse because even though there’s are dedicated insert and eject parts for the heatsink, they are in places that don’t work! The heatsink clip goes in from under the second barrel of the gun, but it’s the first barrel that fires, and the place where the clip is ejected is right under the place for the optional optical sight! And the second barrel is then supposed to be where the range finder is, but it’s close to the heatsink insertion slot… It doesn’t make sense! Please help!
This is such an excellent question, and there isn’t an easy answer. Essentially you have to choose how you want to look at it.
Mass Effect 2/3 eschew a lot of lore and hard science in the name of The Rule of Cool – which isn’t a bad design decision (even if my eye will always twitch seeing Miranda walk into vacuum with a face mask). So, what you SEE in the game just isn’t compatible with the ‘rules’ of the universe.
For instance, the optical sight you mentioned is really utterly unnecessary in a world where you have canonical smart targeting. Right from the codex:
Top-line weapons also feature smart targeting that allows them to correct for weather and environment. Firing on a target in a howling gale feels the same as it does on a calm day on a practice range. Smart targeting does not mean a bullet will automatically find the mark every time the trigger is pulled; it only makes it easier for the marksman to aim.
So, if you have targeting assist, what do you need the sight for? A manual sight is actually a step backwards technology-wise. Well, it’s in the game because it’s a modification that gives the player agency, looks cool, and adds to the gameplay.
Similarly, two of my favorite guns in the game are the Piranha and the Typhoon, the design of which make no sense from a lore standpoint. Small arms weapons in Mass Effect don’t use traditional bullets. They use an ammo block, from which an appropriate-sized projectile is shaved off the block and accelerated by magnets. Yet, the Piranha has an ammo drum and both of those weapons spit bullet casings. Why? Because look how fucking cool they are.
The animations aren’t a good thing to rely on, either, because those are also limited by game design. If you take a look at how a gun is held in a character’s hands, it sometimes looks REALLY goofy, because in Mass Effect 3, a universal gun design was used to design all the animations around. (Side note – have you ever noticed how a ME1 biotic holds their gun while casting a power? It’s wild.)
So, how do the heatsinks work? How can a universal design fit and manage heat loads from very different weapon types? Unfortunately the answer isn’t really in the game, because it didn’t really need to be. It was an in-universe explanation for a new mechanic, and the visual of it is tailored to the player: it needs to be easy to see for pickups, and it needs to facilitate gameplay, so it’s “universal.”
There is an answer here, though. A heat sink in and of itself isn’t complicated, and the laws of thermodynamics don’t change from weapon to weapon. You could think of it as kind of a PEZ dispenser. When you buy a PEZ candy roll, you get a wrapper with X number of PEZ in it that you shove into a dispenser. So, the thing that changes from weapon to weapon is how quick it goes through each candy. A Carnifex burns through more heat per bullet than a Typhoon, so it requires more sink. And once each PEZ gets saturated with heat, it pops out of a vent.
As for where the heat sink is located on the weapon, it would have to be somewhere easy to access and change out on the fly. And sometimes, when the weapon design isn’t compatible with the lore in the first place, it’s might be hard to actually figure out where that would be. It’s a really fascinating clash between world building and game design. If you’re writing about it, you kind of have to pick and choose how you want to confront it. Do you tone down the Cool Factor in favor of the lore? Do you handwave it? Do you just…not mention the discrepancy? It’s up to you. In my case, Sam Shepard’s favorite shotgun is still the Piranha, even if the design of it doesn’t make sense. I’m just…not gonna comment on that part of it. XD

I need too remember this!
5 Narrative Writing Types
Dialogue:
Dialogue is either a writer’s best ally or worst enemy. It can be fun and easy to write when you know each of your characters well, or hell if the words never seem perfect enough. It can be harder to find a voice for each individual personality, which is why character building is so important.
Your readers should be able to tell who is talking without even being told, though a novel shouldn’t be a game of guess who, so let’s keep most of those dialogue tags ;)
Example: “why do you always wear your hair in a high ponytail?”
Action:
Action is just stating what your character is doing, from simply blowing their nose to raising their sword and impaling their opponent. Example: she pulled her hair up into a tight ponytail at the top of her head.
Description:
Description is typically one of the best ways to bring your readers into the story. Using the common idiom “show don’t tell” is how people understand how to write their description. Use the 5 senses: taste, smell, touch, hearing and sight. This is another narrative type where you either excel or fills your with despair, don’t worry, skills can always be improved. Example: her long blond hair was pulled up in a ponytail, the silky locks falling from the top of her head.
Exposition:
Different than description, exposition is stating background information, something general that helps with the context understand your characters and your world. Example: she always wore her hair in a tight ponytail at the top of her head.
Thought:
Internal dialogue, we all have one. These are just all the random thoughts we have in our head stated plainly. Most people don’t filter their thoughts, so neither should you characters (cautiously). Example: I couldn’t quite remember if I had ever seen her with her hair down. I’m not sure why she kept it pulled so tight in her elastic.
Why are these so important to know?
Balance: A well-written and immersive story will have all of these 5 narrative types weaved into one another, and finding out which one to do at which time is a personal choice. Looking over the examples again, while they all have the same information, some are more detailed, some bring new questions while others are just stated facts that need no further explanation.
Pacing: Not an easy task. Using these will help you with pacing, but you may need to play with them to see what works best for your story. General guidelines: Dialogue and actions speed up. Description, exposition and thoughts slow pace.
Your author voice: Every writer will have their own balance when writing, and it can work well for many authors, especially depending on genre. Stephen King can describe everything meticulously because it helps create tension in his horror novels. Likewise, if a mystery author did the same, readers would get bored easily. No matter how you create your story, use all 5 narratives, and balance them in a way that works best for your story.
Above all, and most importantly, no matter which narrative you use, be careful with action slumps, excessive dialogue clumps and avoid info-dumping.
Let me know if this was useful to you, or if you have any questions or comments. Please let me know if something I wrote is wrong.

Happy Writing!
