Okay, I have to ask- Why do you ship Barlyle?

I swear I'm not hating, just curious. I mean, 'Rewrite the Stars' was absolutely perfect. So here I am, asking what do you exactly see in that ship.

Hi, Anon!

First thing I wanna clarify, I ship most of the (canon and fandom) relationships in TGS at least a little bit. 😂 So, I do ship AnnexPhillip! I absolutely love their relationship in the movie, and Rewrite the Stars — the song itself and the scene/performance in the movie — is absolutely LOVELY. Literally gorgeous. The chemistry that Anne and Phillip — and Zac and Zendaya as actors in general — have is undeniable. And, the fact that they are an interracial couple in a film set in ~1870s America is extremely important.

But, Barlyle IS my OTP.

I think that a side to Phillip was left unexplored in the movie itself and I believe very strongly that his character was very much bisexual (or biromantic). And, several things in the film itself point to this. His interactions with Phineas are not what I would think of when I think of two “business partners” or a mentor and his apprentice. First of all, it is HEAVILY implied that movie-Barnum seduced Phillip into joining his circus — and this is something that I can back up with parallels to love interests in other movies. See below for examples in the classic “The Graduate,” and in one of Hugh Jackman’s older movies, 2004’s “Van Helsing.”

And, going back to Phillip’s sexuality — when Phineas sees Phillip for the first time at Caroline’s ballet recital, Charity says that Phillip is known as “a bit of a scandal.” They never really explicitly say WHY, but, watching TGS, you’re led to believe that he’s considered a “scandal” for the drinking — this is further hinted at in the reception hall when Phillip reaches for a glass of champagne. But... we’re talking about 1870s America here. Prohibition was not yet a thing. EVERYBODY was drinking, ESPECIALLY those in the First Class. Phillip grew up in a First Class lifestyle. Of course he was drinking. And, while I do not deny that he’s basically a PG-13 version of an alcoholic, I do not think this was enough to label him a scandal.

You know what WOULD have labeled a young, wealthy, childless bachelor in the 1870s a scandal? Especially one who took up playwriting as his occupation?

Rumors of his homosexuality. (Or, as I feel is the case with Phillip, bisexuality. But, we’re talking about the 1870s here — most people shuddered at the idea of a man fancying another man, they probably could not even fathom the thought that a man could like women AND men at the same time. So when Phillip was labeled a “scandal” by higher society, they, too, probably only had a one-track mind. You were either homosexual or heterosexual, full stop).

Now, going back to the Barlyle ship itself.

Phineas and Phillip are VERY touchy-feely with one another, and — while the fire scene definitely, I think, played a HUGE role in cementing the potential of a relationship between them — it’s not even just Phineas RISKING HIS LIFE IN FRONT OF HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTERS to carry Phillip out of a burning inferno that I’m talking about. I’m talking about Phineas placing his hand on the small of Phillip’s back as they’re going upstairs, the goddamn Bowtie Fondle during The Other Side, the extremely close proximity in which they are always standing (especially prevalent in the scene where they’re meeting Jenny Lind). I’m talking about the way Phillip says, “You brought JOY into my life” after the fire, and the way his eyes literally fall to look at Phineas’s lips as he says it. (Swear to God — go back and rewatch this scene, if you want. He literally stares at Phineas’s mouth. And, for what reason?)

I’m not even this touchy-feely with my best friend. So why did the TGS writers create a relationship that is this touchy-feely between two 19th century men who are supposedly only “business partners”?

AND.

My personal FAVORITE part that I do not believe is talked about in fics or among Barlyle shippers NEARLY enough:

At the very beginning of TGS, when A Million Dreams is playing and we’re watching Phineas as a child, it is revealed that Phineas’s father gets sick and passes away. On his coffin is the same top hat that he was seen wearing earlier in the film, the top hat that Phineas takes and keeps for DECADES. It is, presumably, his father’s only heirloom.

It is the same top hat Phineas wears during his circus performances. He has other top hats — we see him wearing a gray one at one point — but the one he wears during his role as ringmaster is the very same one his father left behind. I *believe* it is also the same one he carries (for luck? I don’t know this for sure, but I feel like it could be for luck) when he shows up on Charity Hallett’s doorstep and asks permission to court her.

So WHY would he give his business partner his father’s top hat? His ONLY heirloom?

kismetconstellations and I have talked about this a lot — she’s the one who first point out to me that he wears his father’s hat while on Charity’s doorstep — and she told me that some people think Phineas giving Phillip his father’s top hat symbolizes a sort of “fatherly relationship.”

But if that were true, why would he not wait to pass down his father’s only heirloom to one of his daughters? Yes, he never had a son in film, but that doesn’t necessarily matter. Caroline or Helen could have still kept the top hat to pass on to their own son once they’d grown up and married.

But no, Phineas passes his father’s only heirloom on to a man that has no familial relationship to him. Considering the age gap, it’s fair to assume that Phillip wasn’t even born yet, or else was a tiny baby, when Philo Barnum passed away.

(Also the names Phineas and Phillip just sound couple-y as hell, LOL)

(But I promise that’s not the only reason why I ship them 😂😭)

But, yeah. There you have it! There is a lot more I could go into, but I think most of the rest is all fandom-established stuff and didn’t necessarily come from the movie itself.

And, I didn’t even talk about the lyrics to The Other Side (which is a fucking analysis in and of itself, let me know if you’re interested 😂) and I only talked about the obvious fire scene a little bit. :D

Hot damn this movie is good

Hugh Jackman IS the Greatest Showman and should be receiving an Oscar for Best Actor tonight, and here is why…

(This May be quite the speech so grab some tea)

1) He brought so many people out of the shadows for this movie.

For starters Michael Gracey. Michael Gracey was an extremely well known commercial director who Hugh Jackman worked with on a commercial. Once they wrapped he told Michael that they would have to work on a movie together but Michael, on record, says how no actor he has ever worked with had kept this promise, but Hugh Jackman did. Michael Gracey directed his first movie, let alone movie musical, and there we have The Greatest Showman phenomenon that is growing day by day.

Secondly there’s Justin Paul and Benj Pasek. When they first joined the project they were staying in a friends house, with a rented piano, and Michael Gracey lied to the big Execs just to get the go ahead for them to write the songs. Although they won numerous awards for ‘La La Land’ and ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ before the release of The Greatest Showman, they were first picked up by Hugh Jackman and Michael Gracey. No matter what they have never failed to make it known how greatful they are for their support.

And finally Keala settle! Keala was a broadway performer who was originally a member of the ensemble for the workshops and refused to sing the lead vocal in 'This Is Me’ but the whole team begged (and bribed her) until she agreed to sing it, in the workshop that later got the movie the greenlight. It was then when she landed the role as 'Lettie Lutz’. Keala has said numberous times how she avoided the phone calls of the producers and just wanted to hide in the background but they would let her, how Hugh Jackman would find her and tell her that she couldn’t hide any more and how he would let her cry on his shoulders over how overwhelming the whole experience was. She’s now about to perform at the Oscars (OH MY GAWDDDD) and has become such a Role model. There’s something so genuine and touching about her friendship with Hugh Jackman that nobody can deny and it makes my heart hurt how much gratitude Keala has towards him.

2) He is the Triple Threat.

There’s literally nothing the man cannot do. For someone to go from the role of Curly in Oklahoma, to Wolverine in one of the biggest movie franchises ever, to John Valjean in Les Misérables and now P.T Barnum in The Greatest Showman, they have to have an undeniable amount of talent (And that’s ignoring all of his other performance achievements such as The Boy From Oz, his own Broadway Show and presenting the Oscars.) He can sing, dance and act, and to quote Michael Gracey “There’s not that many people who can pull that off, in fact there’s nobody that can pull that off like Hugh.”

3) You can’t fake the genuine love and admiration everyone has for Hugh Jackman. There is not a Greatest Showman interview that I’ve seen where whoever is being interviewed hasn’t mentioned how kind, humble and incredible it has been to work with him. Whether it be fans, fellow cast, crew, even paparazzi he has always respected everyone and that speaks so much volume. It needs to be talked about more.

Overall The Greatest Showman is everything it set out to be, it brings people who previously hid, into the light. It gives everyone, no matter who, a place to feel a part of something and more important than anything it teaches people to love who they are. It has been so incredibly snubbed by critics but much like in the film the people adore it. Critics and the industry can say and do as they please but you can’t Manufacture pride anyone has in this movie, be it the cast, the crew, or the fans.

And guess what

IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT HUGH JACKMAN!!
