Mandela's Leftovers Vol. 1 - False Miracles

Merry Christmas, everyone! Today I have a special gift to share.

Today, I'd like to go over some of the unused, extra, and prototype content that I made for my game, False Miracles. Think of it as sort of a look-back on everything I've done this year.

Well, let's get started!

Concept Art / Character Concepts

Aero

Aero was the first character I ever designed specifically for False Miracles. He was meant to be a personification of the Frutiger Aero aesthetic, specifically inspired by Windows Aero design from Vista/7.

This was the first drawing I made of Aero, for a discord server art contest. I drew this around the time I was still making Aquatopia, so my art style was a bit different.

This is the rough sketch of their cut-in portraits. I decided to give him a more silly atmosphere, so I give them that :3 face, lol. Also, some people have said that his shoes look like crocs. That wasn't intentional, but perhaps I'll roll with it if it's the majority opinion.

Adrian Pélagique

I designed Adrian after I designed Aero. Frutiger Aero as an aesthetic often portrays both technology and aquatic life. While Aero was the technological side of things, Adrian was meant to represent the Aquatic aspect of it.

This is a drawing I made of him on a school whiteboard around the time I was developing the demo. He's probably my favorite to consistently draw.

This is the sketch of his cut-ins. It was also the drawing where I designed him. For many of the characters, I was improvising their design while drawing their cut-ins. At this point, Adrian did not have a color-scheme yet.

Þ (Thorn)

Thorn was designed after I designed Adrian. Another aspect of Frutiger Aero is nature and plants. So, Aero, Adrian, and Thorn are kind of like the Fruitger Aero personification trinity, lol.

This is a drawing I did of Thorn recently, I imagine this is her casual attire, when she's not gardening. Her fashion sense is inspired by my grandma.

And, her cut-in rough sketches. Like Adrian, her design was created on the spot.

Nisali Adriel

Unlike the last few characters, Nisali is not inspired by the Frutiger Aero aesthetic, because she's actually a character I created long before I created False Miracles, for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I still play her as a character in D&D regularly, actually!

This was the earliest design I could find for her, from a character sheet from around 2021-2022? Her design and clothes are quite different. Note she doesn't have her wings. If I remember correctly, they used to be retractable?

and here's the sketches of her final design. This is also the design I use in D&D campaigns where I play as her. Quite a bit has changed!

Onyx "Roadkiller" Schäfer

While Roadkiller isn't necessarily inspired by Frutiger Aero, they still have that 2000s air to them, and I think that aids the game. I wanted to design a character of rebellious nature, taking inspiration from alternative fashion.

I believe this is the first proper drawing I made of them. Not much changed from this and their final design, although they did not have a color scheme yet.

This is the cut-in rough sketches. I notice that I left some of the details that required line-less art out of the rough sketch, so I could do it later. I also had their tongue out in their boss attack pose, but got rid of it for some reason. I don't remember why lmao

Skyler Woods

People who've been following me for a while probably knew about this character before False Miracles. I featured them as the main character of an old album of mine called "Into the Woods" which is very old now, lol.

Some old art I made of them in like, 2022? Meant for a sequel album to Into the Woods that I never ended up making.

Eventually I repurposed them for False Miracles as a sort of tribute to my old work. I also like them as a character, and wanted to use them more. Perhaps they can appear in all my work as a sort of sign that what you're looking at is made by me, or something.

Other / Misc

The sketch I made for Magu's sprite. Magu is a guest character, and was created by @d6ggyb0x. So if you want more of Magu, go follow him!!

This is art of Skyler and Thorn when they were younger. I'd imagine this is what they looked like in High School.

Originally, I wanted there to be alt-color palettes for you to choose from. These are ones I made for the demo, that I never ended up implementing.

Unused Assets

These are graphics that I planned on using in-game, but never did.

Unused Achievements

These are icons for achievements that I never ended up implementing due to time constraints. The first one was for clearing all Story Mode routes, and the other two were for clearing a match without using lives or bombs.

Unused Border

Originally, I wanted to include mini-games or something like that, sort of like Plants Vs. Zombies. This would've been the graphic used for those, since you wouldn't be competing against a CPU in some of them. This was scrapped pretty early on, because I thought it might've been too much of a task to implement. Maybe I might try something like this in the future.

Unused Staff-roll images

These were two graphics I wanted to use in the staff roll. Instead of the scrolling city, I wanted this image to pan from the grass up to the sky. It's a picture I took myself, but when I tested it out, the image quality was too low when zoomed in. So I never used it. The ball would've bounced around the screen, but I threw it out because I thought it might be too distracting.

Unused Music

These are songs that I wanted to be in the game, but I threw out before release.

*Note: The songs you hear were originally composed in Online Sequencer, but were remade in LMMS like the other songs to be accurate to the final version of the game.

Aquarium ~Vibraphone Version~

This was an unused version of Adrian's theme. The version you hear in game would've played normally, but when Adrian sent over a boss attack, it would switch to this version.

This would've been a cool concept, but ultimately with how limiting Scratch is as an engine, would've been a nightmare to implement. So I didn't use it.

Photosynthesis

This was originally meant to be Thorn's theme. When I was first creating Thorn as a character, I imagined her with a more bratty, childish attitude, but as I started designing her more and more and started writing for her, she changed to a more motherly, optimistic and friendly character, so ended up making a new theme for her. This one is okay, but in retrospect, I'm kind of glad I never used it. I think Serenity fits Thorn much better.

Looking back on this year, I'm really happy with how much I was able to accomplish this year. There were times where I thought I would never even finish this project, but I'm glad I did it. Thank you so much for sticking around. Happy Holidays, and I hope you have a Happy New Year!!

Wait really? There are unused tracks in Touhou 18? It's surprising to hear about this. Back in the Pc-98 era, it was quite common to come across unused tracks in their files. I'm curious if these new ones are actually playable..?

Skyon'sMusicCollection

My upcoming debut album, currently in its early stages of work, will showcase a collection of fresh music I have been diligently crafting over the past two years. This compilation will include exclusive personal projects that have never been shared before. My thoughts on the new Hifuu Album

Well, Taboo Japan Disentanglement just came out! after reading the story and listening to the tracks, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the album!

The tracks

I'm going to go through the album tracks in order and give my individual thoughts on them.

1 - Morning Comes on Tanabata Hill (Original)

This is surprisingly emotional for an opening track. The new drum set here is wonderful, and the piano is soothing and atmospheric. I do think the melody is kind of all over the place though, and it's a bit hard to follow. All in all, a really nice calming song.

2 - Tinkerbell of Inequality (Original)

I've been excited to listen to this one ever since the album got announced because of the interesting title, and HOLY SHIT THIS SONG IS AMAZING. The instrumentation is so weird but oh so good. The track is ominous but jazzy. The melody is catchy. It reminds me of GFC and CoSD, with it's apocalyptic futuristic vibe. This is easily the best track in the album. Solid.

3 - Does the Forbidden Door Lead to This World, or the World Beyond? (HSiFS arrangement)

Now we get to the arrangements. The song is sporting a new drum set and piano, and I can safely say that the instrumentation is a huge improvement to the original. To be frank, I'm not too much of a fan of HSiFS's instrumentation, now don't get me wrong, the songs are great, but they suffer a bit because the instruments ZUN uses are a bit lackluster. Here, that is not the case, this a great arrange. Something I do want to note, is that the BPM of the arranges seems to be lowered a bit from their original counterparts. Not a bad thing, but it's interesting to keep in mind as you keep listening.

4 - Smoking Dragon (UM arrangement)

HOOOOOOLYYYYYY SHIIIIIIIT. The key change. the new drumset. the new, climactic/triumphant atmosphere. The new section added in??? It's all so perfect, this does the original song justice. I love this so much. One of my favorite arranges in the whole album.

5 - Mugen Noh ~ Taboo Marionette (Original)

This song is calming, but sinister sounding as well. It hits a nice balance of calming and uneasy. The instrumentation, once again, is really good here. I do feel that the electric guitar a bit later in feels a bit out of place, but in general, the song creates a really good atmosphere, and it's definitely a standout track.

6 - Crazy Backup Dancers (HSiFS arrangement)

I don't really have much to say about this one, other than that it's a fairy good arrangement of the original song. ZUN added a new synth(?) into the mix, which gives it a distinct sound from the original. It's fun!

7 - Yorimashi Between Dreams and Reality ~ Necro-Fantasia (AoCF arrange)

ZUN. you can't keep getting away with this. This is peak. The song has a newly added intro of the Necrofantasia main theme before the song kicks in, and WOW does it create an atmosphere. The instrumentation is once again great and the key change (that just dissapears half-way through lmao) is also really cool. This is a great track.

8 - The Lonesome Path in Hitachi (Original)

A surprisingly upbeat track given the title. It's composed in swing rhythm, and because of that, it kinda reminds me of Let's Live in a Lovely Cemetery and Like the Brilliance of Fairies. Not that that's a bad thing, but it does make it sand out a bit less for me. Still a good track, though! Also ZUN chill out with those reverbs

9 - The Lamentations Known Only by Jizo (WBaWC arrange)

I like the new choir here, it makes it sound more dramatic. I am a bit disappointment that the flute kind of overshadows the Spooky Lead from the original, but it's not a bad arrangement at all. And man this drum set is really doing wonders rn

10 - The Concealed Four Seasons (HSiFS arrange)

WOW. TALK ABOUT A GREAT FINALE. This arrangement tweaks just enough without completely changing the vibe of the original song, and it's fantastic. About halfway through, there's a key change that makes it sort of feel like a phase 2 to the song, and it really completes the whole package. Fantastic.

11 - Apparitions Abound Even Outside of Night (Original)

Oh cool, what a nice, calming, uplifting trac- ZUN WHAT ARE YOU DOING. So the song starts off very calming and atmospheric, and then turns into digi-rock like a minute in. It's kind of jarring but I think it works, the song is still fantastic, and does a good job wrapping things up for the album, and the story. Speaking of which...

The story (spoiler warning)

Without going into too much detail, because I highly recommend you read the story on your own, the predictions of Merry and Renko being separated where not exactly wrong, although I think the story was a lot less heartbreaking than everyone thought it would've been. It serves as a nice drama and really shows how these characters relate to each other. Seeing Renko drop everything just to save Merry shows that even if they get on the wrong foot, they're still the Hifuu club, through and through.

In conclusion, this album is absolutely stellar. ZUN's instrumentation this time around is incredibly diverse, and I can tell he was having fun experimenting. The story is also well written, showcasing these two characters and their conflicting yet similar ideals. Please, go give this album a listen! It may have been 8 years since the last hifuu album, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Guess what? Today is my birthday, which means I am officially turning 18. It marks the beginning of my journey into adulthood, I suppose...

I know this post is going to be a little long and some few vents here and there but, i want to express my gratitude for your support when I posted my (Not so best) first Eosd arrangement of Alice's stage. Initially, when I didn't have my laptop, and for my very dedicated early viewers who have been with me since the beginning of my channel. A fun fact for my newer viewers - I used to upload Gacha content (Yes, I used to be a silly cringy Gacha YouTuber! :3). Most of it consisted of cringy and unoriginal stories that I created, featuring a silly and bubbly half-dog boi named 'Doggy Sky,' who is still the mascot of this channel (now known as Skyon because he's like my child!). Many of my earlier works lacked originality as storytelling wasn't my strong suit teheh... It's unfortunate that these old videos are lost now. I wish I had archived them so I could revisit them and chuckle at my own cringy creations before deleting them. It's sad that a part of my channel history has disappeared...

[Also another fun fact about my channel's name, 'Derpy_UwU2006'. The name 'Derpy' is inspired by one of my favorite Mlp characters named Derpy, 'UwU' is a nod to my furry phase :P, and '2006' represents of course my birth year.]

One year comes by, I came across a specific Touhou arrangement called "A World Nightmares Never Seen Before" from Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom in the style of the 6th installment.

I really like how they arranged the theme! Afterwards, I wanted to listen to more arrangements done in that style. Soon enough, I discovered  @_boga0817 ​​​​'s channel from this video.

I was mesmerized by their amazing work in imitating this style! The more of their works I watched, the stronger my desire became to arrange like them. They heavily influence me to start my own Touhou arrangements. I have been following them since around 2020. Initially, I used to upload their unreleased or work-in-progress arrangements from their Google Drive. However, I realized it was wrong to take their work without consent and eventually deleted the uploads. Thanks again to  @_boga0817 ​​​​​ for inspiring me to arrange!✨

I just really adore the sound of the SD-90 in that classic Windows installment from this incredible franchise that has captured my interest for the past 6 years.

Anyways I would like to apologize for not uploading more arrangements as promised. Balancing personal life and dealing with burnout has made it challenging to keep up with my commitments. The whole idea of turning 18 is particularly overwhelming as it marks the end of my childhood, leading me to reflect on everything and feeling a bit depressed. I'm feeling very anxious about what the next chapter in my life will bring, filled with uncertainties about the future. I fear that I may end up feeling very lonely due to struggling with social interactions and lack of friends. Being alone most of the time has left me lacking in social skills and makes talking to people difficult for me... I simply want to express my gratitude to everyone for sticking with me through this journey. In 2024, despite the challenges I've faced, I am choosing to remain optimistic and envision a bright future ahead..!✨
