I did not play a lot this year but finished nine sols 3 times, did the true ending and cried.

I'm really enjoying the way Nine Sols is mixes up the formula of a standard metroidvania and is willing to fuck with the player a bit. The first three bosses are pretty straightforward, but then the fourth guy captures you, tortures you, and sends a squad of goons to attack your village. By the time I got to him I was personally invested in kicking his ass. The fifth boss then completely switches it up. Normally after beating a boss you get a little five panel backstory comic as an additional reward, but for the fifth boss you find the panels as you go through the level. It really helps build the suspense and accentuates the horror.

It's neat. It's neat to see a game that's willing to think about and make decisions on an almost metatextual level, not for the sake of being clever but to enhance the storytelling. I hope its something the game keeps playing with in the second half.

I was thinking of a nine sols dungeon meshi au and got as far as Ji Mithrun before forgetting what I was doing. But I think "I have no great aspirations" Ji translates very well to "I have no desires" Mithrun?
