I just watched The cat returns because I'm on a mission to watch all of the Ghibli movies I haven't seen yet, and it was such a cute film!!

I too wish that I could be swept away for one night into a cat realm, live adventures and come back in the morning with an answer for all of my life problems lol

This anime is hilarious. Rae is in a league of her own.

Okay but like... I'm in love with them your honor? Like Rae is an utterly fascinating character to me. At first glance, she seems way too clingy and a masochist who can't leave Claire well enough alone... and then you realize that's entirely the point.

Like growing up in Japan, Rae's expected to act a certain way if she is going to be publically out of the closet. She's expected to act a certain way, she's expected to be grabby, and very public about her affections. She's supposed to be a cliche. Japan's asking her to act this way and it hasn't settled in for Rae that she isn't in Japan. That here, nobody cares how she acts, as long as she's a good person. She's secretly deeply miserable and right now she thinks of Claire as her favorite game character. Not as a real person.

Claire meanwhile... it hasn't just never occurred to her she can be interested in girls. She simply doesn't know you can. Bisexuality, to her, never crossed her mind as nobody's told her it's even a thing. Nobody has ever once told her it's possible to like a girl back, because this being a Victorian society, you're expected to marry a man of equal or higher status.

I seriously love their relationship dynamic starting out, because it's so different and has a lot to say about love both in Japan and in Victorian times.
