It's incredible how widespread the worldbuilding trope of "this culture/species has no art" or "they're so focused on war they don't have any culture", have you ever seen the clothes and items of nomadic cultures, their song and poetry, ever even seen what hunter-gatherers craft? Jesus Christ.

Safia lost her parents in a horrible fire. She's never met the distant aunt, Hakim Whimsy, who she is taken to live with; Whimsy's house is on a hill and it's rumored a monster lives there. And that's kinda true. Miss Cathryn welcomes her, and then Whimsy introduces herself. It's clear she's the monster, but Safia doesn't notice because she's blind. Safia is excited to learn that Whimsy was once an adventurer, and she's made to feel at home in a house full of wonders. But Whimsy tells Safia that she was disfigured in an accident, and asks her not to tell anyone. (In fact, folks aren't sure what happened to the adventurer Hakim Whimsy and her assistant Cathryn Blanca; folks think they're lost, or maybe dead.)

It's not too long before they're off having one last adventure, though, and this takes up most of the book. It involves saboteurs, Whimsy's rival, a hidden archeological site, magic, and Whimsy trying to conceal her appearance (which appears doomed to fail at some point). Plus Safia makes a friend, which is a rough adventure of its own.

This art book will center on dark fairies with a focus on queer themes and forbidden fruit.  The structure, for now, will be like that of a traditional zine; a mixture of art and stories and comics. We may change or adjust the structure at a later date. Contributors can also choose to create more than one piece if they wish.

Hey booklr! I'm posting this on behalf of my friend Analeigh Sbrana (@literaryxqueen on insta), who doesn't have a Tumblr. Her debut novel, Lore of the Wilds, went live for pre-order this morning, and I'd love it if we could show it some love.

Analeigh tried for two years to sell her story to trad-pub, but the vibe was that trad-pub didn't want to take the risk on a Black Fae fantasy adventure set in a breathtakingly descriptive magic kingdom in a market currently flooded with white fairy romances. So, she took matters into her own hands and joined the ranks of self-pub.

Full disclosure: I worked on this book as a proofreader, and I loved every minute of it. I kept forgetting I was supposed to be working and reading ahead. I scheduled a week to finish reading it in did it in 3 days, and the only reason it took so long was that I had to actually pause and work on it 😅.
