BIOGRAPHY

Triggers: Death, cancer

Arden was born in Austin, Texas to two very proud and very busy surgeons. She rarely saw them growing up, and they were constantly buried in their work. Work was all they knew, and they never had time for their daughter. She tried to understand growing up that they had to work, but it was hard on her. Arden was raised by a nanny, but it wasn’t the same thing as a mom. Arden knew they loved her, but maybe they were meant to have kids of their own.

Her freshman year of college, Arden moved to New Hampshire to attend Dartmouth–her parent’s alma mater. During her first semester, her mother was diagnosed with Stage II Lung Cancer. She retired early from surgery, but kept practicing medicine to keep herself busy. Her mom managed to keep the cancer at bay for a few years, and reassured Arden that she should stay at school. She took her mother’s word for it, and stayed at school.

Eventually, Arden decided to attend medical school. She made the decision on her own, and didn’t tell her parents until the day she started. Being a doctor was her true calling, and she couldn’t picture herself doing anything else. Her final year of medical school, her mom’s cancer progressed and Arden had to come back home to take care of her mother. During her time being her mom’s primary caregiver, they connected for the first time in Arden’s life. She realized how much her mom actually loved her, and she was enjoying every second of caring for her.

Six months later, Arden’s mom passed away. Arden was devastated. She took a year off of school and almost didn’t go back. Still, she returned to Dartmouth to finish her degree. Afterwards, she started her internship in New York. Now, she’s following in her mother’s footsteps to be a world renowned surgeon one day.

lilac :   what was your muse’s childhood like ?   how has their upbringing affected them as they’ve aged ?

“My parents were never around. They were busy and worked hard, but I grew up thinking they didn’t want me. I felt like they never paid any attention to me because they were so busy. I was mostly raised by my nanny. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Liza. She was like a second mother to me, but nothing would compare to my actual parents love that I never could seem to get as a kid. I guess it’s left me having a hard time giving love. The almost never hugged me, and it’s left me not a huge fan of any touch unless I’m comfortable with someone. It did make me independent, and I am grateful for that.”

oak :   who would your muse consider the strongest person they know ?  

“Ed. I always have had a feeling there’s more going on behind the curtain than he’ll ever let show, but he’s somehow maintained a huge heart and beautiful soul. It just seems he’s been through so much--things you’d expect to make a person dark or cynical. Ed’s the opposite though.” ( @edgarmendoza )

“A warm cup of tea and a classic movie I grew up with. Lady and the Tramp and the Aristocats are usually the ones that make me happy and keep me sane in rough times.”

aloe :   how does your muse handle grief ?

“I’ve only ever experienced it once, and I just went back to work. It’s easier to keep myself busy to avoid it. If I keep my mind buys, I know that I’ll be okay. Some people might not think that’s healthy, but it helps keep me from losing my mind.”

angelica :   where does your muse draw inspiration in life ?   what motivates them ?

“This probably sounds selfish, but I’m self motivated. It was just me as a kid. My parents weren’t around so I just counted on myself. It’s easier to draw inspiration from myself when I’m the person who motivates me the most.”

“Sounds about right. It’s true. It always makes me happy when I get to see you.” He took the bag from her hands, but she pretended to reach back for it at his jokes. “Look, it won’t be long before you get wrinkles. I think mine are from stress, but I think you’ll be young forever,” she said, leaning against him as he squeezed her shoulder. “See, guys look great with the salt and pepper look. You’ll really pull it off, though, especially with your hair type.” She giggled, ruffling his curls a bit. Arden stood with her hands crossed over each other has he opened the gift. “You’re welcome.” Arden couldn’t help but smile at him. “I didn’t know if you had anything for your band and I just--thought you’d look good with that.”

“Ok so I’ve been asking various people this, because I’m genuinely curious. Is there a certain age that people start playing Bridge? Because one of the moms from Rose’s school asked me to a game of Bridge with some other moms and I told her I’d have to check my schedule. But am I too young for that game? Or is there even a right age?” She asked in a ramble, taking a long sip from her margarita in order to curve her spew of words. “My mother is of no help since the only thing she took up when she got older was salsa lessons and Texas Hold ‘Em, so I can’t exactly ask her. What do you think?” Sol paused, turning to the person next to her with a soft expression. “I probably sound nuts but ya know, the question’s been nagging at me for some reason.”

“I always thought you learned how to play bridge in your thirties,” Arden suggested, shrugging her shoulders. “I don’t think you’re too young for it.” She never saw her parents play Bridge, but she rarely saw them do anything that she considered fun. They barely had time to be with her so entertainment outside of work was a rare thing for them. “Salsa lessons? Maybe you should start a salsa club with the moms? Your mom can take the lead,” she laughed. “I say go play Bridge with the moms. They want you to hang out with them, and if you don’t liek you you don’t have to do it again.”

It was a slow day, with Edgar mostly sittingaround, smoking along to the Yves Tumor album blasting through the speakers,totally lost in his own world of music. A good way to spend the time leading upto his birthday. As Arden stepped into the apartment, holding way too manythings, Edgar beamed in surprise at his friend. “Ards!” He called out inresponse to his name, jumping off the couch, “look at you!” He wiped off a losebit of flour on the side of her cheek before grinning at his friend, “I hopeyou didn’t get me anything, it’s supposed to be lowkey,” he glanced at her withhorror on his face, “nobody wants to celebrate turnin’ thirty.”

Her friend leaped off the couch and Arden couldn’t help but grin at him. She was happy to see him as she always was. His hand reached out to wipe what she assumed was flour from her cheek. “That’s embarrassing. I thought I got it all.” She set the cake down before holding out the bag to him with a smile. “Of course I got you something. Let me get you a birthday present,” she said, holding the bag out to him. “Geez? You’re already thirty? Oh, my god. Is that a wrinkle I see?” she teasing, pointing at his forehead. “Kidding! I’m kidding. That’ll come when you’re 31.”

What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

“The White Mountains. It’s part of the Appalachian mountains in a part of New Hampshire. Honestly, I’d love to build a cabin there and just disappear into the mountains for a while. It’s beautiful.”

Arden considered baking to be her hidden talent, but it had been years since she’d baked a cake. She usually did cookies since she found them quicker to make, but she wanted to make Ed one for his birthday. At the end of it she was covered in flour, and it seemed she spent more time cleaning herself up that she did baking the cake. After frosting it, she carefully placed candles around the border before grabbing his gift and heading out the door. She’d gotten a t-shirt made with his band name on it. 

“Ed!” she called out excitedly as she stepped into his apartment. “Happy birthday!”
