Love Your Body
Too bad Jesus gets spiritualized into some kind of bodyless, angelic being. He was so physical in his life. Touching, being touched, rubbing shoulders, crying, breaking bread.
He even said, “Eat my body. Drink my blood.” A way of saying, “Dig into my life. Chew on it, swallow it, digest it. Drink deeply from it. Until your life and mine are the same life.
The way of Jesus is the way of being transformed by his kind of consciousness—seeing with the eyes of the heart. Being transformed by compassion that leads to concrete actions: touching, giving, sharing, comforting, celebrating, speaking out in the name of justice.
They say you are what you eat. The church eats the body of Christ, represented by Communion bread, to become the body of Christ in the world. The hands and feet of Christ in the world.
To do that we need to be in touch with our own bodies. Our bodies can ground our racing, fearful minds. Our bodies can tell us when our hearts are closed.
To be in touch with our bodies we need to pay attention to our breath, one form of meditation. We need to pay attention to tension and relax it. We need to laugh, and cry, and feel the wind and sun on our faces.
Our bodies will connect us to others and to God if we listen to them. If we love our bodies. If we together become the body of Christ in the world.

What absolutely kills me is that most teenage girls today are trying to find wisdom on tumblr.
What absolutely kills me is that most teenage girls today are trying to find wisdom on tumblr. I understand why, because it is a vent of emotions for a lot of people. They can find people who feel the same things that they feel in all it’s rawness and go “same tho”. It’s a place people go for comfort: either to vent or to find a post that says the words they can’t say. It’s also a place people go for encouragement and wisdom, even if they don’t think of it like that. Suddenly you’re having a deep chat with a friend and you’re saying “yeah there was this post on tumblr and it was like…”.
But it is not the right place to go for wisdom, the Bible is. Tumblr is a place people aren’t afraid to reach to their deepest darkest places and say what they mean. THAT in itself, is a beautiful thing. We need to do that. But then we need to go the Bible to hear it’s wisdom and hope speak to our deepest darkest places, because it is the only thing that truly can. The church can learn a lot from Tumblr because it’s a place of confronting what’s going on in our hearts. But Tumblr could learn a lot from the Bible, because it is true wisdom from God and the place where lost people are found. The church is a hospital for broken, lost sinners where there is forgiveness and hope.
