Today is the 30th anniversary of Irene McCormack RSJ (21 August 1938 – 21 May 1991), an Australian member of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart who worked as a missionary in Peru. She was executed in Peru in 1991 by members of Sendero Luminoso ("Shining Path"), a Maoist rebel guerrilla organisation.

Next Tuesday 18 May is Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day. It is the anniversary of the end of the Sri Lankan civil war. Many lives were lost during the war and Tamils are still struggling to get justice 12 years on.
