Having visitors and onlookers was something Dr. J.S. Steinman was very used to. Between his stint teaching at his medical alma mater and all the years he’d been an intern prior, it was almost strange not to work without someone hanging over his shoulder like a vulture. 

That wasn’t to say he appreciated the company, though. Steinman, since moving to Rapture, had become very picky about the number of bodies in his operating room (aside from a nurse, anesthesiologist, and the one on the table in front of him). However, there was no need for the former two that evening. The surgeon was hunched over a corpse, carefully slicing and stitching at the skin grafts he was practicing on her delicate body.

“There was a time when I was worried about patients dying on the table under my knife. True that I wasn’t licensed as a ‘general surgeon’ on the surface and had a significantly lesser risk of having a critical patient...but there were instances in which the surgery I did was paramount to a long, healthy life.” He didn’t elaborate on the circumstances, choosing a smaller scalpel from his tray. “It was also strange when I was permitted to practice on corpses. We began with pig carcasses and were eventually moved up to humans. Yes, it was strange at first but...

after a while in this line of work, you learn to ignore the guilt.”

The surgeon looked up from his plate, gently nudging his spectacles further up his nose.“Assuredly not, my dear Jolene. Most nights I prefer to stay in. I’m not very fond of the noise and the mayhem of public spaces, though Rapture is much more tolerable than New York City was. I can take comfort in the fact that much more of the populace shares my opinions and drives.” He gestured cordially to the chair across from him.“Take a seat, if you’re not in a hurry. It’s been a while since we’ve caught up.”
