Should this Photo or Video Have Been Published/Reflection Blog Post
When it comes to journalism, a lot of tough calls are to be made. The line of opinion and fact, predication vs. probability, to share information that may cause fear vs. withholding information, what to share and what not to share, etc. Everyday journalists are having to make these tough choices and that is simply their job. One of the most common decisions that have to be made is whether or not to show violent or graphic material when reporting on the event.      Graphic and/or violent material is classified as any material that depicts violence, gore, exposing nudity or close to, drugs, abuse, etc. Most of the time, this is what the news primarily reports on or these will be headlining stories. While these are important to know and report about, the question of what should we show comes into play. As a society, we have come a long way into what we are used to seeing. To sum up, we have been desensitized. However, although this may be the case for the majority, there are still some who find these things triggering and evoke certain emotions.    Take the falling man for example. The photo itself does not necessarily show anything graphic, but rather the content behind the photo is. For many, we can look at this photo and be saddened by it, but some may feel triggered because of their own struggles with mental health. The most important reason why this photo was published was because it depicted exactly how tragic it was for these civilians to experience 9/11. A person who may or may not have had struggles with mental health felt it rather be best to take his own life, then die a long and gruesome death.     From what I've learned and gathered from this presentation is that graphic and violent media have a reason for being shared and should be. However, this does not dismiss the fact some people get triggered by the content. To move forward with this type of reporting and photojournalism, there must be trigger warnings put into place more. We must be considerate of those who this information may affect.

Winter Break 2021-2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over Winter break 2021-2022, I had two very monumental moments happen. Betty White passed away and Spider-man No Way Home was released.
Betty White was not only very important to me, but to a whole nation of people, and most likely even more. White was commonly known as an American icon. Most people knew her from her reoccurring role on Golden Girls as Rose Nylund. What most people don't know is that White can often be quoted as "the first woman of television." White had been acting for numerous years before this role.
Betty White's passing on December 31, 2021 was a shock to everyone. Especially since her 100th birthday was only 17 days away. The nation even collectively agreed that she passed away at 100 years old because her being 100 was so important. It was even justified that she lived through 17 leap years, so she technically made up the 17 days she missed.
I chose this specific image because it was one of White's last moments. This image is actually a screenshot from a video in which White thanks everyone for attending her 100th birthday special at the Movie Theaters. To me, that just shows how much character White had in her and loved her fans.
White's passing is a memorable moment of history. Many grew up with White and she was an American icon. Her work in the film industry will forever be remembered as with her.
The second image I chose was the poster for Spider-man No Way Home.
Spider-man No Way Home was the third installment in Tom Holland's time as Spider-man. This movie had a lot of hype around it because it was going to be the formal introduction to the spider verse. It also had a lot of speculation for the other men who wore the Spider-man mask to be in it.
This speculation ended up being true.
This movie was iconic for all Marvel fans. We grew up on Tobey Maguire, spent our teenage years with Andrew Garfield, and now adult alongside Tom Holland. In this one movie, we got to not only see all of the spider-verse's collide, but our own worlds too. It was truly a memorable experience that brought fans to tears.
Seeing multiple actors who took on the role together was also one of the first times we have seen a movie or television show do that. It shows that just because one actor retires from the role, doesn't mean he has given up his right to the character.
Tobey Maguire is and will always be Spider-man. Andrew Garfield is and will always be Spider-man. Tom Holland is and will always be Spider-man.
Both of these moments were trending on social media which is why and how it relates to this course. These moments brought together so many people during these hard times and were very significant to the world of media. While we got to see some of our favorite actors come together in a movie that broke records, we also lost one of our favorite actresses who defined generations.

Rylee Holwager Introduction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello! My name is Rylee Holwager! I am currently a senior at California State University Northridge after transferring from University of Hawaii at Manoa, then College of the Canyons. My major is general Journalism. I had originally chosen for Marine Biology to be my major at UHM, but after one semester I quickly realized that even though I had a major passion for the ocean and wanted to do everything I could to improve it's conditions, I was not gifted at science. Instead of dwelling on what I deemed as a failure, I decided to readjust my viewpoint and do the next best thing - decide on a new major.
After struggling for a whole semester, I knew I wanted to change my major to something I was good at. I went on a journey to my past and thought about everything I was good at. I finally landed on writing and fashion, so thats what I decided I wanted to do. Write about fashion.
Writing has always come naturally to me. In almost every grade, my report card would have praise from my teacher for my writing skills. In 8th grade, I even got 2nd place in an essay contest that I entered in only for extra credit.
I've always been passionate about fashion and have always enjoyed giving advice on the topic. Hopefully, that is where I will end up in 5 years. I want to be working at a magazine and write about fashion. Give advice that will hopefully start trends and help people!
Outside of my career, I hope to see myself moved out and living a well balanced life.
