so…how does memory mapping (file I/O, I think) actually work? what I’ve got so far: you’ve got some file, and you create, well, a map for its bytes: something(?) knows that the file starts at a given position and is so big, and we imagine it as being in a different, more convenient place in memory (where?)

And then as we want to read from the file using this map (assuming it’s lazy, but as I understand it this depends on the implementation?), something(?) knows to load the bytes of the file into the more convenient place we’ve been imagining the file at if it hasn’t been already, and otherwise just read from the more convenient location. (And you can write back to the file from this buffer-like region if you want apparently?)

So I guess my main question is: what “knows” these two things? If it’s “the process”, well, here’s a fundamental hole in my understanding of computers: how do processes know things? (And, maybe, what is “virtual memory”?)

If you're a Mac user and you use external monitors, try not to notice how much nicer text looks on monitors with >200 dpi. It's easy go through life not seeing it, but once you do you can't unsee it and it's very expensive to resolve.
