Wondering how the word gypsy is a racial slur? Why are you referring to it as the G word when it literally means a free spirited traveller. What is so offensive about that?

Let me tell you a story, ignorant one. 

Once upon a time, there were a group of people migrating from northern India and Pakistan after the invasion “of the Persian Muslims who have since settled in Trukey, all of Europe, and the Americas These people are called the Rromani.” (x)

Once the pale bird feces people of Europe came into contact with the Rromani, they believed them to hail from Egypt, thus calling them Gypsies. 

Now about what disgusting white people like you have been trying to turn this racial slur into. There is nothing about being a free spirited traveller if you’re called such a word. What is up with white people romanticizing everything to make it seem all nice and rainbows for them?

“They were not nomadic by choice. They moved around because they had to… they were persecuted everywhere they went, and still are, to this day. They were persecuted alongside the Jews in the Holocaust – the Roma & Sinti”. They were forced to have this sort of nomadic lifestyle because “no country wanted them there”. (x)

Let’s not forget these lovely things Rromani people did and still go through because of who they are:

“Forced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)

Eviction

Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)

Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now – all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered ‘criminal’)

Concentration camps

Starvation

Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs

Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)” (x)

“First and foremost: THE WORD “GYPSY” IS AN ETHNIC SLUR. It is a pejorative. It is an exonym that is hurtful and offensive. You need to accept this, period.

We are NOT your halloween costume. We are NOT your flowy skirt. We are NOT your fashion sense. We are NOT your wanderlust. We are NOT ‘boho.’

Gypsy is not fashion. Gypsy is not traveling. Gypsy is not a headband or a costume, or boho, or a long skirt.

Gypsy is a hurtful ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.

We cannot seem to emphasize this enough to people. This word is a slur. It was created to be a slur. Its meaning does not change. It will always be a slur. It will always be offensive.

‘The word is not yours. It’s ours. We can use it as we see fit. You cannot.’ - biggadjeworld 

We are a real people, with traditions, culture, and colorful heritage that spans centuries.” (x)

Toilet paper pill box.

Another small fun project for recycling! These are perfect for little gifts and a cute way to send your jewelry to customers… it not only give a nice shell of protection to the treasures you put inside, its cost free, customizable and keeps recycling on the mind <3

All you need are - toilet paper rolls - decor ( i used stamps) - Tape or glue

Step one: decorate your roll. I used some of my stamps, but don’t limit yourself to just that… you can use old paper, photographs, tissue paper, paint,sharpie and whatever else you have laying around to decorate. Mod podge and some pattered paper would be fun!

Step two: Once your roll is decorated to your liking, fold down the corners on one end, making it look like little cat ears. Make sure they fold over each other so there is no open gap, and tape down  ( you can also glue the end down) * side note… if you dont like the look of regular tape, they sell something called washi tape? that comes in all sorts of amazing patterns!

-Step three: When you have some side sealed and taped down, wrap and place your item/treasures inside the box ( i wrapped up some earrings) and seal the other end, again making sure they fold over one another so there are no gaps.

- Step four… your done!

Again these are wonderful for gift giving and product packaging. Small, sturdy, cheap, recycled pill boxes…. you can use old paper towel rolls too! those are larger and can fit a bit more than TP rolls.

How I help clueless new witchlings (It’s ok to be clueless, I promise):

“Read. Read the entire section of your local library. Pay attention to the ‘big names’ here and who they do not recommend and why. Go look at the bookstore. Get a feel for what you think you want to do. It’s okay to change your path later. What do you feel comfortable starting with? It’s okay to be cliche.”

“Learn about other cultures and what is and isn’t generally okay to do. Some things are closed to outsiders. Some are initiate only. Some are fine for anyone, but be careful and mindful what elements you add to your practice if you decide to adapt things to your beliefs.”

“YOU DO NOT NEED TOOLS. Tools can be great and help you with focus and confidence, but even if you use tools they absolutely do not need to be expensive. Thrift stores are your friend, and you can shop online for things by using non-witchy terms and get better prices. Ebay is not a bad option.”

“Salt an quartz are great to start with. You need things with which to purify. Purifying is good.”

“Don’t believe everything you hear. Doubt, skepticism, discernment are all really good things.”

“Wicca is not a bad place to start, just be careful who you read. If it doesn’t feel right then you should look at why. Wicca is not superior to other paths. Not all Wicca is initiate. Cunningham is pretty good, but outdated (because he died 23 years ago) and uses a few problematic ways. Ravenwolf is not good, and please steer clear from Buckland. They are toxic and gatekeepers and breed misinformation among other ill ideas.”

“YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE DEITIES. You can if you wish, but take your time and establish relationships with them. Not everyone has them, and that’s fine. Witchcraft is a craft, a secular thing, and it can tie into faith and spiritualism as much or as little as you like.”

“Don’t tell others they can’t do this or that. Curses are not evil. If you are against cursing, just don’t curse. Do not shame anyone for their practice. You do you. Let them do them.”

“Always cross reference herbs with magical and mundane resources. You can’t use every herb in the same manner. You can’t use all parts of all plants. For example, rose petals and rose hips are fine or tea or cooking, but the stems, leaves, thorns, and roots are all toxic. Herbs and plants that go in or on your body should be treated as we treat medications. Cross check for interactions with each other as well as every single OTC or prescribed medication you take. Yes, even Tylenol and allergy meds.”

“Stones and gems are the same way. Some ‘gem waters’ can be consumed, others absolutely cannot. Some needn’t be placed in water at all, some should not come in contact with open wounds, etc. Malachite is a good example of a non-consumable mineral that needs to stay off wounds and out of the body.”

“NEVER be afraid to ask for help. If someone can’t help you, they may know who to direct you to.”

A note on myself: I’ve been doing this for 11 years. I’ve had several guides and a few different paths. I’m currently “eclectic” mostly due to mental health preventing me from focusing on active study. I was new and unsure at one point too, and I was lucky to have my Danny to help guide me. Once I’ve got help for my mental health, I’ll be focusing my studies and creating a dedicated non-tumblr blog for this sort of thing.
