Nathaniel: This is a mistake. Bartimaeus, enthusiastically: A mistake we're going to laugh about one day! Nathaniel: But not today. Bartimaeus, still enthusiastic: Oh, no. Today's going to be an absolute mess.

Nathaniel's relationship to alcohol during the books is quite interesting.
When he attends the reception with the Underwoods, he is stated as wanting champagne, but recieves a non-alcoholic drink instead because he is underage. By the end of the Amulet of Samarkand, as he relates the story of the Underwoods' deaths to the prime minister and other politicians, he is drinking champagne unreservedly. He's twelve years old, and the adults around him aren't stopping it. The magicians don't care.
In the second book, in Prague, he is still only fourteen - yet he orders a carafe of wine with his dinner, immediately after Bartimeus confronts him about the deaths caused by British imperialism.
In the third book, as far as I remember his only interaction with alcohol is when he's at a masquerade party for high-ranking politicians, holding a cocktail, wishing he could take his mask off and drink it. He's seventeen, so still under the UK drinking age, and he's in the habit of using alcohol as a way to cope when he's uncomfortable at parties.
For Nathaniel, alcohol, adulthood, political power, and guilt are all inextricably linked, and he's grasping at all four of them far too young.
