Yeah. Plus, how will they in act it anyways? Cause no one would know if the person confessed it in confession other than the priest and the person confessing, so there would be no way to prove the priest was not reporting child abuse knowingly or not. If the authorities find out a different way, they could waste time and point at a priest and say "did you know anything about this?" instead of gathering evidence and the priest could simply say "I had my suspensions" or "no comment" or whatever.

But I see it less that they would find out through the abuser cause abusers usually don't see abuse as bad but simply necessary, so I doubt they would confess it. I would see the child or spouse hinting more to a abusive relationship, confessing sins that aren't really sins, and asking for help in that way. In this case, the priest can simply finish the confession and say "we are now switching to spiritual direction, could you tell me what your father did to you?" and that way they could honestly report it without rebuttal of the confession rule. As long as the child or spouse is honest about it not being confession.

So Trump's DOJ is suing the state of Washington because WA's new mandated reporting law says that clergy (among many other professions) are legally obligated to report ongoing child abuse if they know about it. And the Christofascists in the Trump regime call that "anti-catholic"

Priests nor any human in the church doesn't have the authority to do that though. The priest is simply the middle man, the forgiveness is done by God. If someone comes to a priest for confession they are not allowed to one: deny that person and two: withold forgiveness from them. If you go to confession and are heartily sorry for the sins you committed and mention during confession, then you are forgiven in confession. If the person going in isn't sorry for hitting their children or committing adultry or whatever, then it's up to God to decide if that person is forgiven, not the priest. And so as simply a servant, they must complete the sacrement. They can set the penance to be turning yourself in, they can pray that the Holy Spirit is able to change their soul through this experience, they could even try and talk to the family members that are being abused, offering spiritual direction. But that's it. They cannot tell others of what happens during confession even if they confess to a horrible crime.

Confession isn't a place for embarrassment, for shame. It's a place of victory of Jesus Christ in our souls. It's a place of growth and renewal. People have, are, and will always abuse the mercy of Jesus and the sacrement of confession just because they don't understand the weight of their actions and the love God has for them. Priests are not God in confession, but a servant doing the Lords work. They have no right to say what happens in confession nor to deny anyone the sacrement. People may see that as unjust, people on this site usually do not understand the works of the Lord. In the Lord's eyes, everyone is His child. He hates seeing his children fight, getting bullied, suffering terrible fates, and being the cause of so much suffering. What He wants is for us to truly go to Him, to be honest with ourselves and with Him, and to bask in His unending love. To join community that will raise you up, to help others see His love for each and every human, and understand that each one of us is capable of great change even if that change is hard and filled with pain. Cheaters, murderers, child abusers are all forgiven if they seek forgiveness. If they truly honestly seek forgiveness and the want to change. That doesn't mean we put them in charge of a nursery obviously, nor that they cannot face justice for their actions afterward. They accept the repercussions of their actions in this world and seek change in this world rather than after death. That is what we hope for.

I would recommend this video that explains better what the sacrement of confession is, since it seems people do not understand why we take it so seriously and why this bill is only going to make martyrs out of priests.
