actually my fave type of characters is a sweet innocent person. a sort of a defenceless lamb in human form. possibly subjected to horrible harm, traumatised or guilt-ridden — or otherwise portrayed as an unquestionably good, sympathetic person. a nice one. it’s the kind of goodness that is generally assigned to victims and miserable ones purely by the virtue of their suffering. but every once in a while you look at them, and there’s something deeply, unfathomably wrong with them. and it’s so fleeting, and maybe you simply misinterpreted something, or had this weird illusion people sometimes see when they look at something out of the corner of their eye. and it’s not like this “wrong” necessarily means actually evil all along.

but you see it and then you have to decide: do you incorporate this wrongness into your vision of the character, filling it with complexity, and have to reevaluate your assessment of their motivations, thoughts, opinions — or do you simply ignore it? pass it off as something completely normal for the situation, even though it’s so clearly not?

and when you choose the former, it suddenly becomes so much harder to talk about the character to others.

so, my lineup of demonbane OCs, intended as antagonists for kuzaku, is as follows:

- a fearsome remnant of the anticross who a) never was an anticross member to begin with b) lives in post-zanmataisei timeline where the anticross got erased from the universe completely c) doesn’t even have a cool roman emperor nickname

- a jaded office lady whose greatest deep-seated regret is failing to become a romanticised sea god’s priestess

- the worst person you’ll ever encounter (an age faker)

- a man with world-destroying ambitions who is also very much convinced that he’s a good person. also the resident bookfucker

sadakiyo is my favourite insane weirdo. his weirdness has layers. at first it’s like “oh. he talks to people who aren’t there, lives in a childhood wonderland and gets hysterical about his car getting wet in the rain”, then, a couple of chapters later, you go “noooooooo he’s actually so sweet and sad and he’s genuinely trying his best despite having been abused for most of his life, he’s not weird at all”, and then it’s “oh. his moral dilemma is him wondering whether a dictator who (by sadakiyo’s own admission) has killed millions of people is good or bad”.

created this chart of urasawa’s characters that take up the most space in my head as a warning (you can’t talk about any of those people with me around because i’ll go on a lengthy tangent, like, instantly). then realized that you must not, under any circumstances, call fukubei special. corrected it in a flash

spent a reasonable amount of time crawling around a used books store looking for eugene o’neil’s plays. as a normal person would

urasawa’s name game #1: it’s interesting how sadakiyo gets called sadakiyo-sensei by the administrations of friend-controlled schools. it’s a nonsensical name, a combination of his status as an employed adult man and his childhood nickname. it’s not only that he can’t grow up, traumatized and isolated and finding comfort in his childhood interests — he’s not allowed to grow up.

friend makes sure that he will stay a child forever, at least through his name, and thus will always be subject to his childish tyranny.

(and, i believe, the friend museum serves the same purpose — never letting him escape the world of his childhood)

i am deeply in love with urasawa’s name game. i want to marry the concept of fukubei denying others both his real name and nickname in order to construe a better, more interesting identity for himself and accidentally losing sight of who he really is. but i can’t because i have a girlfriend and she would be jealous
