Good evening everyone!

I’m elated to announce a spring giveaway on this blog! This is a thank you to all my followers and those who have supported my work over the past few years. I’ve grown a lot, and learned a lot, via this site and those I’ve met here. With luck, I’ll be blogging for many years to come.

As the title indicates, I’m giving away a blank grimoire! But not just any grimoire.

This grimoire will be rather unique! It’ll be handmade by @oddsouldesigns based on the winner’s preferences. Because it will be completely customized to the winner, it will be truly one of a kind!

When I choose a winner, I’ll put them in contact with the lovely and talented Afura of Odd Soul Designs. She will work to create a custom blank, bound grimoire that is exactly what the winner prefers. So, what will it be like? The winner decides!

This giveaway is for those following this blog, MadDiviner. When I choose a winner, I’ll check and see whether the person chosen is following MadDiviner.

Preparing for the Descent: Setting Clear Intentions

In their myths Inanna, Persephone and Psyche are all preparing for a visit to the Underworld. Inanna’s intent is clearly stated; she will go to the Underworld to visit her sister, Ereshkigal. She has prepared a back-up rescue and arrayed herself in her finest powers. Persephone is clearly seeking something other, without knowing what that is (and who among us has never been in that situation?) She has been prepared only by being born into the caste of Goddess and by her close alliance with her mother, the powerful Demeter. Psyche is a mortal following the directives of a Goddess in order to achieve her heart’s desire. She has received assistance from many allies and they have told her how to successfully enter and leave the Underworld.

Preparing for the Descent: Learning to Listen

.Inanna has heard her sister calling. Persephone has heard – maybe the appeals of Hades, maybe the cries of dead souls, waiting to be reborn, or maybe just the ‘voice’ of a single flower, different to all other flowers. Psyche has heard Aphrodite, issuing demands. All of these calls urge them to make the perilous journey. Meredith, Jane. There’s a lot of noise in life. Family,Friends, Strangers. They all lend their voices to to your perspective of the world. Shutting all that noise out isn’t always as easy as it may seem. I have to take my time early in the morning, before the world is awake in the twilight of the morning. I create sacred space and spend time with my Goddess Hekate in the stillness. Sometimes I lie prone on the the ground and hear the earth move beneath my ears.  What do you hear when you listen to your Divine?

Preparing for the Descent

The Underworld has been called by many different names and covers many different experiences. Perhaps you have experienced enormous helplessness at some time in your life, due to illness; poverty; abuse; depression or another factor. Perhaps you have experienced the results of severe trauma, such as prolonged shock; severe injury; post-traumatic stress syndrome; a near-death experience or the sudden death of a loved one. Perhaps you have experienced the loss of a future in the death of a child or a relationship; a career failure or a debilitating illness or condition. Perhaps you have suffered a form of anomie; feeling dislocated from everything around you due to medication, a mental illness, extreme stress or cultural dislocation. All of these things, and many other versions of them I would call Underworld Underworld experiences.  They are characterized by feelings of loss, feeling captive within the unknown and needing release. Almost always, release is set in motion (eventually) by some understanding or change that takes place within ourselves. External things also begin to change; but usually as a result of the internal changes we have made. Afterwards we can look back and see how this happened. From that point we rebuild our lives, and it seems they become fuller, deeper and richer in that rebuilding than they were prior to the Underworld experience. I believe that is because we have met the Dark Goddess while we were down there, and integrated some of her truths into our lives.

I have thought long and hard about meeting the Dark Goddess in this way. And in many ways I have resisted Her calling to me. This has led to a profound and prolonged time living in the Underworld. I’ve been lost on the paths here for many years. Much more than I am comfortable with. And now, I have planned to surrender. To start my journey anew. But before I can go through the Seven Gates, I have to learn to listen, and really listen to the Goddess whispering in my ear. Each day, beginning with yesterday, I have spent an hour, in silence, contemplating the Voice of the Dark Goddess. What will I learn to hear?

Descent into the Underworld

Inspired by Inanna going into the Underworld to seek her sister Ereshkigal; by Persephone in her search of herself: And Psyche, going down the winding roads at the bidding of a Goddess. I’m going to do some Work this Dark Moon, and in conjunction with NaNoWriMo, I’m going to blog my experiences, Following the maps mythology has given to us,I’m going to meet and  I’m going to give myself over to the Dark Goddess, and allow myself to hear Her. Blog entries from now until the 17th will then chronicle my preparing myself for the Descent, both physically and mentally. The 18th through the 20th I will be silent in the Underworld. Expect my story to continue on the 21st will analysis. and summaries.

I love the pagan community, but sheesh you guys.

Spells and herbs and crystals and deities etc. are great. I work with all of these things. But there is a time and a place for these things. I know not everyone can afford doctors, medications, treatments, etc., but if I see one more post about how to cure cancer with turmeric and crystal therapy I am going to lose my damn mind. 

I feel like I shouldn’t have to say this. Science is not our enemy. Science is wonderful. Science helps us live longer and understand the world around us that many of us revere as an entity in itself. Denying scientific evidence doesn’t make you quirky or more of a practitioner/pagan/witch/believer than someone else. It makes the rest of us look bad.
