Traditional Animation
Traditional methods of animation included hand drawn animation, felt animation and stop motion animation. While these methods provided smooth and cost-effective animation, they were usually seen as very time consuming. Hand drawn animation required the artist to draw each frame by hand on a light table. Felt animation was made by using shapes of felt placed over each other to create the scenes for each frame. This was the method used for the pilot episode of South Park by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Stop motion involves setting up a scene with props and models and moving them slightly while taking still photos after each movement. Each photo is a different frame of the animation. Many of Tim Burton’s films were made using this method.
Digital Animation
Digital animation was developed in more recent years and has been used as a frequent alternative to traditional methods. Digital animation involves creating a scene or models on a computer and using rigs to facilitate movement. This method is less time consuming as the artist isn’t required to recreate each individual frame every time. However, in some instances, the animation movement may not appear as natural as compared to hand drawn animations.
Personal Project
For our personal project we decided to follow the theme of “Safety and Hygiene at Home”. Our 2D animation was focused on safety, showing two different scenes. The first scene is simply to teach children to keep forks and other metal objects away from electric sockets to prevent electrocution. The second scene shows a safe method of handling broken glass to avoid getting cut, while also showing that the child should have parental assistance. For our 3D animation, the main focus was on teaching children to wash their hands.
Challenges
One of the main setbacks of the project was the crashing of my laptop. I had lost access to the progress on the project and was unable to work from home for quite some time. When this issue was fixed, I did my best to finish the project within the time I had left. I had also made use of the school’s computers when available to assist in the project.
Critique
When doing our presentation, some of the feedback we received included slowing down parts of the animation that had text so that it could be read easier, simplifying character designs so that the animation could be complete within the time frame as well as only doing one or two scenes for the 2D animation rather than the originally planned 3, as to save on time.

Traditional 2D Animation
Traditional 2D animation mainly refers to animations that were made mainly by hand for example the early movies made by Disney. Each frame was hand drawn and while it does take up a hefty amount of time it provides a very natural flow that is hard to mimic digitally. In present times traditional 2D is rarely used simply for its immense time usage and lack of audience it would have.
Digital 2D Animation
Digital 2D animation follows practically the same principles of traditional except for the fact that it is done digitally and consumes less time to create due to the benefits of software and technology we have in the present day. Most 2D animations would be created digitally in the present day due to cost, time and appeal. For example, most anime, a form of Japanese cartoons, are made digital as they are done on a weekly basis in order to keep up with demands. When compared to traditional animation, digital would have an upper edge due to its vast superiorities including speed, expense and possible revenue.
Personal Project
For our project, we decided to follow a theme of safety and hygiene. Using safety as our 2D animations and hygiene for our 3D. During the creation of our 2D animation we choose to do it digitally using toonboom as to have enough time to finish it as well as our other project. For our 3D animation we wanted to show hygiene by having a character wash their hands and with it we used maya 2018 to create various props as well as animate and used the arnold renderer for a more pleasing display.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenge we faced was the horrid rendering times of maya even if it was computer based and that rendering is what limited us most in our 3D animations.
Personal Critique
Based on what was said during the presentation of our 2d animation and 3d model, we recognized that the animation was too fast for the text that appeared on screen so in order to fix that we increased the length of the sections which incorporated text so it may be read easier.
