Season 6 they really up the amount that Emily has to bait the unsubs and I can't help but think it's to make the reveal of Lauren even scarier.
I wrote that and put it in my drafts to add more later. I have been bingeing Criminal Minds again recently, and right now, I'm halfway through Valhalla and they haven't used Emily as bait in quite a few episodes now.
This almost certainly wasn't intentional, but that gap reduces it to an undertone. Emily as the deceptor isn't fresh in the mind. Especially if you weren't bingeing like me and were watching the original airing weekly, that gap is even longer. It's planting the seed and letting it grow without you even knowing its there. Foreshadowing, sure, but I love how the gap makes it so you are lured into thinking nothing of it until it's too late and you suddenly realise that, yeah, Emily having history deep undercover does make sense. You're thinking of her as this chameleon without ever realising why, and it's not just the presentation of her work on JFT-12.
