Hi there, I'm Nate. This is a side blog entirely dedicated to my university research and projects I do as part of my degree. I'm very interested in creating stories and adventures that represent the people who need some serious representation, and can provide heroes that people can aspire to be like, so a lot of my stuff here will be around comic books and superheroes. If you're interested in finding my other work, check out my art blog or even my personal blog where I post about the things that interest me. 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷

I posted this process video of my development on my finished piece for the CPS brief on ‘admiration’.

Because my open brief has been about animals, I wanted to try and take the superhero side for my industry brief. The theme was around ‘admiration’. I’ve always admired characters that are willing to protect others and be the shield for others. It’s a role I usually take in the video games. I’m always playing the tank role so that I can protect my fellow players in combat. One of my favourite characters that I play is Reinhardt. For this topic, and in line with superheroes, I decided to draw Reinhardt, a big burly german man cladded in crusader armor, doing the thing I love about him most: protecting others. This is my first pass on the character, which I’m sharing although I’ve already begun my second pass on him by tightening up the pose. I’m maneuvering his form so that he feels planted and immovable, and that all his shapes will converge towards his arm and his shield. Carrying over from my first idea, I’m going to be doing bullets flying past, around and against him. Closer ones will be bigger and blurred, others smaller and sharper, others making clean cut lines and some making impacts. I think this variation will be really cool for creating the overall mood and drama of the piece.

This is the timelapse of Kuona, the bonelli eagle character. For this piece, I wanted to capture a lot more of the heat of Africa. For my leopard piece, I went with the savannah feel with more yellows and golds, but for this and with the sky, I steered more towards hot reds and oranges. I researched into acacia trees, a well recognized tree associated with the African plains. I used blurring techniques to give the sense of motion to the overall piece.

I want to make sure for the bonelli eagle that I can show the species’ strength like I did with the leopard. I want to show the bonelli eagle in a hunt, diving down at its speed. I sketched out very very rough shapes to throw some poses around, but I’ve decided to go with the middle bottom pose as it will allow me to capture the speed of the bonelli eagle.

I’ve decided to do a bonelli eagle character as well, to accompany the leopard character. After that, I’d like to design the explorer character. If I have time, I’d like to design the gryphon that will be the essential plot of the narrative but my focus so far is on these three main characters so far.

This is the quick time lapse for the leopard character, Zubari’s character piece. I think I really improved with my lighting and shading with the piece. The idea is that it would be a character illustration showing the character in motion, and I liked the idea of showing the camouflage capabilities of a leopard stalking through the grass. I’ll be doing a character sheet later on for Zubari.

I ended up doing a second clean up for the sketch, adding the spots for the lineart and shortening the length of the face that I felt was too long for a leopard. Also adding some texture to the fur. I wanted to make sure to keep the streamline features of a leopard

This will be a poster/pin-up of the leopard character when I figure out his appearance. It’ll be one of the final outcomes along with his design sheets.

For this project, I’ve been looking at designing some of the animal characters key to the narrative. One that I have been exploring is a leopard. Since it’s based on the actual animal, there’s little for exploration other than the shape language and how I can transport the shape of a leopard into this stylized form. I think I’ve done well in transforming the sleek form of a leopard into this shape. This is more focused around the shapes rather than specific details. I threw some rough colour work to understand what this final piece would be, the character stalking along the savanna, and how the image would be largely made up of yellow and browns for the African feel for this piece.

Working on designing a few styles for a leopard character for my brief. I tried to make the character design very cartoon-y and in the same vein as the studies I’ve previously done. I simplified the look of the leopard in order to keep in line with that cartoon-y animation style.
I like the 1st and 5th edition of these styles that I’ve tried out as others either go too cartoon-y or too realistic.

On the other side, I have a deep love of superheroes, and that’s all thanks to Stan Lee who created MANY, if not all, of the superheroes I loved growing up. I have a very strong admiration for how Stan Lee saw the world, and how he believed we all had the potential to be a superhero even as ordinary everyday people; that we did not need superpowers in order to be heroes.
I like the idea of dedicating these industrial brief towards the admiration I held both Stan Lee and Steve Irwin, and how highly I held them as role models and figures in my childhood.

In terms of conservationists, nobody has impacted the way I think about animals or my admiration for them as much as Steve Irwin. His dedication to education and conservation really impacted me as a child, and sparked interest in wildlife. When I think of admiration for any conservationist, I think of him.  When trying to come up with ideas, I know I will definitely need to include animals, particularly crocodiles as his work with those is what he was known for.

For my industrial brief, I am looking at entering the Clip Studio Paint competition. The freedom to interpret the theme allows me to have a lot more freedom unlike the book cover briefs. For this brief, I want to create something that deeply connects to me and something I admire, which will fall into two categories: superheroes or conservationists. I will make a mood board of these things and see which pulls to me as an idea.
