I went in to the studio to clean up, but I ended up adding a little bit more to each of my last two paintings. In my final painting I added lighter highlights to the shoes to portray where the light was hitting them, as well as adding shadows. I also put more work into the ribbons giving them a little more texture than what they had before.
On the portrait, I added a darker line around her chin to make sure that it would be easily differentiated from her neck, as well as adding more highlight to her collarbone area. I also touched up her teeth by making the lines in between each tooth not as noticeable, making one of the big teeth larger at the bottom (so she doesn’t look like a rat anymore), and also adding a little more yellow to them because they seemed too pink before.

For my final painting I drew a lot of attention to not blending and making sure that the tonal value between light and dark were very evident. I used both of these paintings to help me with that goal. I used thicker paint like that done in “Rhapsody in Bloom” by Niki Gulley, however not as much as she has. I feel that the small, short strokes really helped me create depth in my painting, as well as show the texture of the shoes. I also looked at Reggie Duffie’s “The Ballerina Painting” to get used to seeing the colors that are actually there and not what my eyes see. I did my best to use this technique however my picture had very dull colors, but I was still able to incorporate yellows and blues and some salmon colors.

I am very pleased with how this painting went! There are still things that I feel like I could change to make it better like working on the ribbon a little more, adding a shadow, making some parts of the shoe brighter and thinning out the tongue of the right pointe shoe. However, I am very proud of my progress with this painting!

4/27 I started my final painting and I am quickly trying to finish it! There's a lot left I have to do, but the paint from the background was still wet so everything was blending together. With this painting I am going to be really conscious about not blending because I want the tonal values to be really dramatic.

4/25 I am officially done with my second portaiture and I am really pleased with it! The teeth and mouth were tough but I worked through it and it doesn't look too bad! I am proud of myself for not over blending her face, it really makes the tonal value pop.

4/20 Almost finished!!!! I think I need to make her nose longer, define her teeth a little more and then add her necklace in! Possibly playing with her hair color a little bit more, but I'm pretty satisfied with this project :)

4/13 After the critique I fixed her left cheek to be less protruding, but I have yet to make her chin smaller and her jaw more defined. I also got critiques on making her skin tone a little more yellow and making tonal value more defined

4/11 Getting there!! I think I have to change the pink background in order to make the pink on her face to pop more. I could also go over it again with more pink tones. I'm also thinking that I need to make the shadows and the light spots more drastic. I am really not looking forward to painting those teeth...

4/6 Started my painting and I'm roughly getting the proportions under way! So far I'm pretty happy how everything has started out. Now onto the ugly stage...

3/31 For my critique, my fellow classmates noted my large amount of negative space, the flatness of the background of my mirror, and adding additional highlights to my hair. After looking back at my painting I decided to fix these critiques as well as making the mirror rim thinner. For my next painting I am going to make sure that I won't have too much negative space because that has been a critique for both of my paintings thus far.

I finally moved on from my face and put a base on for my hair and started working on my hand. What I need to do next is add texture and more color to my hair, lengthen my thumb, add colors and shading to my hand, fix the background color, and if I have time, finish up little details on my face! A lot to do in only a few days, but if I spend the time on it, I think I can get it done!

I think I have finally gotten most of the proportions on my face correct! I do need to fix the coloring just a bit and move on to my hand and hair, but it is coming along nicely!

It is coming along! I still need to work on the hair in the reflection and the big part of the painting, as well as the hand and the background of the mirror. The proportions on my face need to be fixed as well. I am hoping that I can get all of this done in time for Thursday.

I have made SO MUCH progress from the start of this painting... I still have a long way to go, but I am much more pleased with where I’m at. I need to add more colors to my face and hair to add more life to myself. I also need to readjust my gaze, but I feel that everything is coming together.

While in London for spring break, I visited The British Museum. I learned that in the Roman period in Egypt, they would paint very realistic images of those that passed away on their mummy case or on their caskets. Since we are working on portraiture in class I was really admiring the highlights, lowlights, and even different colors of the face that is shown. I definitely want to try and exhibit these techniques in my portrait.

Definitely in the “ugly” stages of portraiture, but it is really fun to see how my painting has developed, and how it will! It’s been tough to try to figure out how to see the different colors in my face and to portray them on to the canvas, but with some determination (and a lot of blending), I think I will be able to make this grandma turn into me :)

1. Saint-Severin, 1909 by Robert Delaunay
2. Winter Landscape, 1908 by Gustaf Edolf Fjaestad
3. Port-en-Bessin, 1888 by Georges Seurat
I identify with these three paintings because of the texture that is used in them. In the first one I love the greens and the blues to portray the cool tones of the church, and also the ragged texture. In the next two they both use a dotted texture that I am really drawn to and would love to use this technique in my final painting.
