PRE-CRASH

Retta was born on January 18th 1978. Due to her being a premature baby in the 1970s she was born with sensorineural hearing loss. Her childhood was filled with waiting rooms and doctor appointments.

Despite her minor hearing loss, she was encouraged by her parents to visit school as often as she could. She begrudgingly obeyed, never missing a chance to complain. She was more of a loner through elementary and middle school, only making a few short-term acquaintances (Taissa being one of them).

She often visited church with her grandma, despite not really believing in god in the context of the bible, she took more of an agnostic approach. Her and Laura Lee became a sort of acquaintances, engaging in small talk here and there.

At the start of high school she starts hanging out with the alt and stoner kids, finding them simply… cool. She would join in their antics, skipping school and getting stoned under the bleachers.

In sophomore year her parents recommended that she joins the soccer team in hopes of her being influenced by the ‘good kids’. Their attempts did not particularly work, instead Retta found herself actually enjoying soccer while still spending time with the stoner kids. She was a great runner, earning her spot as a winger on the Wiskayok yellowjackets soccer team.

WILDERNESS

Retta was in complete shock, dissociating for the first few weeks after the crash. The days blended together, leaving Retta often confused by what was going on.

After the shock wore off, Retta was distraught. She missed her family, wanting to go home more than anything. Everything was always so quiet, her ears didn't buzz with the passing of cars or noisy alarms she never knew the source of and it scared her.

She groups herself with Travis and Natalie, joining them on their hunting expeditions. She couldn’t use guns due to them damaging her hearing so she opted for using a switchblade Nat had lent her. She quickly got used to the rhythm of killing, forcefully detaching herself when her blade touched flesh.

Retta joins Taissa and the girls when they head to the woods in search for help, despite her and Taissas rocky relationship. Retta would never refuse a way to go home.

At doomcoming Retta drinks the soup, getting drugged like the rest of the girls. She partakes in the same things as the girls. In the morning she can’t help but feel disgusted by herself. Instead of apologising to Travis she packs her bags and heads out in to the woods in search for help again, once more detaching herself from reality.

After a few days of roaming the woods, she honestly lost count after day one, she somehow finds her way back at camp. Instead of finding the girls, the first thing she sees is dead Jackie. God knowing how long she had been laying there for

Retta half believed Lotties wilderness cult, leaning more towards Natalies approach. Even though she was agnostic, she felt like sometimes Lottie would deceive them.

In hopes of rekindling her and Taissas relationship from their childhood, Retta tries to approach her. Taissa immediately turns her down, avoiding her presence even more. Retta can't help but to feel offended.

When Natalie draws the queen card, Retta doesn’t participate in the hunt, staying back with Travis. When the girls bring back Javi her heart sinks. Out of respect for Travis, feeling sorry for him she doesn’t partake in eating Javi.

The reason I love this scene so much specifically is it makes more sense why Misty is so loyal to, and in love with Natalie by the time of the future events. Nat is the first one to know all her darkest flaws and not totally push her away and eventually finds comfort with.
