oh no notebook you said the magic word
(in their language they dont say “i love you” they just violently stab each other to death and i think that’s beautiful)
You know, I’m kinda surprised that so many people jumped on the bandwagon of the murderous lovers that’s been going around. I see the Notebook and the Clock not as psychopaths, but as careless gods. That is, they have a lot of power, and it’s gone to their heads. The Notepad became viciously controlling because of it, while the Clock just ignores everything that doesn’t fit in with his version of reality and doesn’t understand the consequences of his actions at all. True, they’re a bit messed up, but not murderous. In the first Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared video, the creepy stuff with the hearts and the freaky dancing happened after the Notepad left the characters to their own devices. She didn’t mean for that to happen, and that’s why she said they should never be creative again at the end. Although her messed up views were indirectly responsible for what happened, she would never have instigated that directly herself. As for the clock, in his video, he seems to find people’s wishes and opinions funny, and when something that could be bad happens (the dead guy) he just ignores it because he doesn’t care. He’s not making anyone get old and die, he just thinks it’s funny/doesn’t care when they do. Either way, I see them as a lot more passive than they’re represented here on Tumblr. I love the character designs that so many talented artists and cosplayers have given them, and they’re a great fandom to be in. But I’d like to see different interpretations of their personalities too. After all, the point of the videos was that people tend to go along with the opinions of others too much, or do as they’re told too much. I’m not saying that the murderous interpretation of them isn’t valid or anything, I’m just saying that I don’t see them that way, and I’d like to hear other people’s thoughts on different ways they could be interpreted. I think that would be pretty cool.
I think those are some really good points, and I had a slightly different interpretation too - though not quite the same as what you said. But it still paints them as something other than psychopaths.
I picture them as immortal/invulnerable beings - perhaps some ancient witchcraft-gone-wrong - who have been alive for a very long time and who are really fuckin sick of living. Death, to them, is the ultimate goal. They’ve been around so long that they’ve forgotten that mortals find death to be scary. The DHMIS incidents are really just them trying to have fun and remind the three mortal puppets of the wonderful “gift” that they have - the ability to die - but inadvertently end up scarring them.
So when I ship them, I picture them sparring and staging each other’s murders repeatedly and having a lot of fun stabbing and mutilating each other. It’s almost like roleplaying. The fact that they want to kill each other so badly is a sign not that they hate each other, but that they love each other so dearly. They want each other to be happy, and if only one of them could die, they would each want the other to get what they’ve always yearned for. So they’d end up trying to kill each other.
