Creative Growing Pains Artist Profile 3 - Rik Freeman
Rik is a narrative painter/muralist based out of Washington DC. He has been working as a professional artist in DC since 1989. I actually had just met Rik fairly recently while out on a shoot for my internship with Caandor Labs, so I had no idea who he was or how awesome his artwork was until we had stepped into his workshop for the first time. As soon as I saw the space, I knew I needed to interview him. Getting to speak with an older artist like him should give me greater insight into some of the hardships of creativity.

Creative Growing Pains Artist Profile 2 - Scott Fitzgerald
Scott Fitzgerald is a photographer based out of Silver Spring Maryland and another close friend. What drove me to interview Scott was a combination of his rather recent adoption of the medium (having picked it up within the last 3 years) along with the experience he gained honing his craft while volunteering in The Peace Corps. In his Interview we discuss a little about about how he finds his inspiration during his travels and how finding that inspiration has changed since start of COVID-19.

So what is “Creative Growing Pains”?
Creative Growing Pains is a multimedia exploration of Creativity and the Growing Pains of Creative Freedom.
The idea is a series of photographs, video clips and interviews exploring the idea of lost and regained passion. Presented as a series of digital Triptych’s, I want to explore the stories of those who lost and/or regained their creative passion. The creatives I choose to interview will be practitioners of multiple forms of creativity
In the first panel we explore how as children, we have a carefree nature that allows us to explore our imaginations and creativity as we see fit. - I imagine this panel being presented as a collage of still images of happy, active children, with childlike art similar to what you would find in elementary school Art Rooms.
The middle panel introduces the idea of losing, or lost passion. When pursuing creativity into adulthood, we find it harder to create as freely as we once had. As we go through adulthood, we find that our relationships with our passions may change or become lost to us. - I imagine this panel being a digital mixed media arrangement. I want to present images of chains or shackles surrounding a video clip of an artist in their creative element or creative space recounting creative low points in their lives, detailing the hard truths and lessons they had to learn.
The Final Panel is a snapshot of the artist- I want this panel to simply be a headshot of the artist, representing who the artist is now as the culmination of their growing pains and hard lessons.
In terms of how I will display this project, I have a few ideas
- If being displayed digitally, I want the Triptych to be interactive where each image can be enlarged and have a caption. The first Panel will be a vertical rectangle holding an image that can be enlarged and display a caption. The middle panel will be a square that will allow space for a video to be displayed on a bed of chains. The final panel will be another vertical rectangle with an image that can be enlarged and display a caption. I am looking into using Padlet to accomplish this version of a digital show.
- A second idea I have for digital display is to create a digital gallery using Artsteps, a website that would allow me to create a digital 3D art exhibition space. With it, can create 3 rooms, with each room dedicated to a different panel of the Triptych idea, thus turning the gallery itself into a digital triptych.
- If displayed physically, I want to have 3 Monitors each with headsets. Each monitor will display their own triptych in full screen. I would want the middle panel of each triptych to play their video and audio content automatically. If not provided by the school, I will borrow my own monitors/tv’s from friends or family who are willing and able.
