I understand that it's jarring when characters in generically medieval fantasy settings start precisely delinearing their gender and sexual identities, but y'all, do not blame Gen Z authors for this. Romantic fantasy was doing exactly the same shit way back in the 1980s, except instead of alphabet soup jargon they'd use a goofy conlang which was putatively spoken by one of the setting's major cultures, but whose vocabulary only ever appeared on the page – always in italics, for some reason – in order to allow the protagonist to bring up the fact that she likes to fuck women without using the word "lesbian".
