Majestic Pailon del Diablo (The Devil’s Cauldron)
The Pailon del Diablo, or in English “The Devil's Cauldron”, is a breathtaking waterfall in the Rio Verde area, about half an hour from Banos. This mammoth waterfall is exceedingly attractive and allures millions of tourists every year from all over the world. It is about 80 meters high and it’s one of the most awe-inspiring waterfalls to visit in Banos and in Ecuador. Situated in the western foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes, the Pailon del Diablo rewards hikers with an intimate glance of one of the most powerful forces of nature: Water.
The best time to visit the waterfall is just after the monsoon, however, the temperature in Summers ranges from 13°C to 15°C and in Winters from 12°C to 14°C.
The pathway for this hike is easily located at the end of the Ruta de las Cascadas, a popular bicycling route which begins in Banos and follows a series of impressive cascades for roughly 17 kilometers to Rio Verde, ending at the most spectacular waterfall of the route, the Pailon del Diablo. You can get there by bus, car, hike, bike, tour, and taxi.
There are two entrances to the waterfall, which will take you to different places and both of them offer really different kind of views. From the entrance, one needs to do a small hike to the waterfall. With a small fee of $2 visitors are allowed to access to a mystical set of stairs carved out of the cliffs touching the waterfall. For those willing to get wet and reach the highest point of the trail, one needs to climb a small cave-like trail around 10 meters(40ft) that follows the cliffs uphill through a series of narrow openings for a proximate view of the falls. The small viewing platform at the top provides an extraordinarily close viewpoint for appreciating the raw power of the falls. Following the waterfall near the entrance, a swinging bridge offers an exceptional view of the falls along with a variety of flowers including orchid and one can see a number of bird species in the woods.
