It’s always the BL enthusiasts who call The Devil Judge “queer bait.”
BL’s are cute. And it’s satisfying to see queerness on screen that’s direct and self-identifying. But people (who borderline fetishize male homosexuality) disregard any other type of queerness on screen because it doesn’t look like heterosexuality.
The queer experience is not universal. And coding is an actual legitimate thing. Queer coding IS queer representation. Because it’s had to be. That’s the only way we’ve been able to see ourselves on screen, and in stories, for decades. To now delegitimize that, and look at a show like The Devil Judge, and say “there’s nothing gay about it,” just because, what…the two male leads don’t kiss on screen? Is extremely dismissive of the actual queerness coded into these characters that people actually do recognize and relate to.
Queerness does not need to be announced. A character does not have to say “I’m gay” for that to be true.
Does everyone have to see this story through a queer lens? No. And it’s fine if someone looks at Gaon and Yohan and sees nothing romantic about their relationship. We project ourselves onto the characters, we interpret the narrative differently, in a way that fits our own experiences. But do not disregard what’s happening on screen, and every person who relates to the queerness they see there because it doesn’t fit your formulaic BL tropes that you’ve somehow decided is the only legitimate form of queer content.

Just a PSA if someone decides to enter the tags before watching the show: no, it isn't a censored romance, it's heavily queercoded and it mostly relies on classical BL tropes without actually being a BL. Yes, we ate that up and we love meta-ing about it with the most romantic lenses, but that's just us. If you want, you can interpret it in the most heterosexual way possible and be done with it. Yes, we are aware of the resemblance between Gaon and Isaac and we pressed 'continue' anyway, no we are not insane, we just have specific media consumption preferences that this show happens to meet.

This is def, 100% Kang Yohan xD
`Headcanon request `
#Jealous and possessive Kang Yohan
Thx💟
Kang Yohan does not like people touching what's his. Okay? We just don't do that
Like, at work he has to control himself when other lawyers or barristers or even the camera crew shake Gaon's hand or pat him on the arm
Gaon's fans are worse because anytime Yohan sees them swarming him, he just feels jealousy rear its ugly head within him
Most times whenever he see Gaon's fans, he'll quickly walk out with Gaon and either grab him by the arm, wrist, or sometimes even hand and guide him out of the court because they need to know. They need to know that Kim Gaon does not belong to them, even though they like to think that. Oh no no no, Kim Gaon belongs to him
To make sure that everyone knows that Kim Gaon belongs to him, he slowly starts to exchange Gaon's wardrobe with his; his suits, his shoes, his watches, cologne...basically everything Gaon owns slowly gets replaced by something Yohan owns
Gaon doesn't notice the difference (as Yohan chose things from his closet that were more Gaon's taste/style) but others around him noticed
Jin Joo definitely noticed and she eyed Gaon up and down a couple of times but she never said anything because she, being the ever observant queen that she is, notices the looks that Yohan gives others when they're around Gaon and she knows. She's not dumb, she knows that look and she can recognize the difference between Yohan's clothes and Gaon's clothes so she knows
Yes Yohan even gets jealous of Kkomi whenever Gaon spends more time playing with/petting her and Gaon called him ridiculous when he mentioned it once
He does get a little jealous of whenever Elijah and Gaon hang out together and he sees the way Gaon makes her smile but then Gaon invites him to join them and he's not so jealous anymore

I Leave Them To You
Prompt number: 3. “I’ve waited for this.”
Fandom: The Devil Judge
Rating: G
Tags: Domestic Bliss, Found Family, Family Fluff
Laughter travelled across the mansion bouncing off the walls and filling the place which had once been filled misery and anguish with bursts of tranquillity and light. The dark corners of the haunted home were now being enveloped in a bright and warm light. No one could recall the last time the people in that unforgiving prison-like home has truly been happy but he was grateful that things were slowly changing.
He watched thoughtfully as Yohan teased Elijah and how the young girl had retaliated by chasing her uncle into the hallway. He heard the man let out a short, soft and pleased chuckle as the teen broke into fits of giggles, with a smile decorating her lips. He’d been watching as the two gradually learned how to express their affection and love for one another after years of distancing themselves from those emotion, it put his yearning heart at ease seeing them mend each other and their bond.
Observed Yohan who had all this attention fixated on his niece, eyes visibly filled with what he could only describe as an overwhelming amount of fondness for the young girl. He watched as the corners of the older Kang’s lips curved up with satisfaction as he huffed in delight for being the cause of her joy. Witnessing their antics hadn’t felt like watching an uncle with his niece, there was more, so much more. It felt like watching a father with his child, rebuilding a kinship that had been smothered by the demons of their past, pain and loss which has tainted their cores but he knew that the two were learning to move past that.
Eventually that serene sound of laughter faded away as footsteps approached the room the two stood in, their eyes were now lit with excitement because they knew exactly who was about to walk in.
“I’m home!”
That was him, the cause of all the things he’d witnessed the last few weeks. The one who’d brought love into their home, the man who wore a familiar face but who had never been a replacement for himself. This was the man who’d torn down the walls this family had built around themselves. He saw his little brother walk towards the man, the softest smile resting on his face. Grinned as his brother greeted the man with quick peck and brief embrace, he watched his daughter follow after him and give him a hug and roll away at the speed of light.
“This is it; I’ve waited for this.” He, finally, welcomed the placidity which had been waiting for the day it could wash over him. Kang Isaac felt at peace, after being trapped in that house in his ghostly form for the last decade his soul had at last found solace. His brother and daughter were learning to let him go and he had Kim Ga-On to thank for that.
“Oh Lord, please let this become their constant.” He prayed as he faded away.

Defend My Love
Prompt number: 2. “You have no proof.”
Fandom: The Devil Judge
Rating: G
Warnings/Tags: Ga-On defending his husband (who’s not actaully his husband), Yohan teasing Ga-On (why? because he can.), just pure fluff, no hurt/no comfort
Ga-On scoffed in disbelief, at this point he’d lost count of just how many times he’d had to explain himself and his choices. It was downright irritating that the two people who had been his only family for the last 13 years seemed to be hell-bent on treating him like an immature child. Over the last couple of months Ga-On had learned to just drown their nonsensical claims out, of course the victim of their bullshit was Kang Yohan and Ga-On was just done with it.
“Kang Yohan is a devil.”
“Kang Yohan is a monster.”
It was always “Kang Yohan this” and “Kang Yohan that”.
Ga-On was absolutely sick and tired of it. What gave them the right to judge a man they barely even know, what more did they know about Yohan then the man let be known. He was sure the answer would amount to nothing, after all he had been the one living in the Kang mansion for the past few months. He’d seen a side of Yohan that he was sure very few people had actually witnessed, Ga-On has seen the playful Yohan who finds joy in teasing his niece, the Yohan who could plan and scheme till he’s blue but didn’t have the heart to tell his housekeeper that she’s a down rotten cook. The Yohan who watches longingly whenever he walks in on Elijah and Ga-On playing a game of cards or Jenga. He had seen the Yohan that stayed secretly hidden within the walls of that dark house, so who were they to judge him.
“Kang Yohan killed his brother; I don’t understand why you’re defending him.” His best friend exclaimed in annoyance and Ga-On felt an overwhelming amount of disappointment wash over him. In all honestly, he had expected Soohyun to know better, to not let her judgement be clouded by the words of others. As an officer of the law, was it not her job to obtain substantial confirmation before labelling a person as a murderer?
This was his breaking point; he had once accused the man in question of that crime. Ga-On had seen the pain and horror in Kang Yohan’s eyes as those words left his lips, it was the first time Yohan had let Ga-On see a small part of the torment he’d been living with for the last decade since the church fire. He saw the mark that embossed his back, a constant reminder of a night Ga-On was sure that he would rather forget.
“Where is your proof?” Ga-On retorted, his tone was iron-clad and calmer than even he could have imagined.
“You have no proof, so what right do the two of you have to make such an assumption. How much do you know Kang Yohan to deem him a murderer, where do you get the confidence to accuse him of that crime? I remember being taught to make conclusions based on facts and evidence so where is yours? You have none, if you did, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Ga-On’s voice got louder and louder as he spoke but not loud enough to be heard outside the room, the rage that he’d been holding back was slowly making its way to the surface. He could feel his heart thumping against his chest because he’d never stood up against his mentor and best friend before, he could never have imagined that there would be a day where he stood against them but in an odd way living in the Kang mansion, getting to know Yohan and being brought into Yohan’s plans had opened his eyes.
There was a time he had blind faith in the justice system, a system that has not only failed him time and time again but had also failed Kang Yohan and the people in his team. The two people before him believed in a black and white world, refused to understand that people, the world, most things around them were grey. Ga-On wasn’t sure if they would ever open their eyes to it and he no longer had the energy to attempt to make them see it.
“Now if that’s all you called me here for, I think this conversation is over. Have a good day.” He said with a sarcastic smile and walked out of the room, he let out a long breath and proceeded to walk towards the exit of the building but before he could get too far, he heard a voice call out to him.
“Kim Ga-On!”
He stopped in his tracks, turning around on his heels to face the man he’d just spent the last half hour defending. Kang Yohan greeted him with a pleased smile as he strolled closer, stopping only when he had successfully invaded Ga-On’s personal bubble, something he seemed progressively more comfortable doing these days. He hoped that the older man didn’t notice how his breath hitched when his hand caressed Ga-On's shoulder lightly but the younger recognised the smirk that adorned Kang Yohan’s face, it was sly and knowing. He was sure that the older man was aware of exactly what he was doing, it was a long-winded game the two of them had been playing since the moment they stepped into each other’s worlds. A game to see who broke first, to see how much was too much and Ga-On couldn’t complain because it was a thrilling affair.
“Ready to head home?” Yohan’s question pulled him out of his thoughts and Ga-On nodded in return not trusting his voice, while he had just confidently stood up for this man, feeling his body so close to his own, close enough that they were breathing the same air Ga-On lost all his strength. He hoped that their little game would end soon, it didn’t matter to him who ended up victorious so long as at the end of a stressful day of work he could go home and cook for his little makeshift family one that actually respected his decisions and didn't belittle him, that he could watch Yohan and Elijah mess around playfully with each other, talk about their day at the dinner table and make plans for the weekend they could all enjoy. And if he got to stay in this little family, he would even let Yohan take the win.

You Help Me Breathe
Prompt number: 1. “I need you.”
Fandom: The Devil Judge
Rating: G
Warnings/Tags: Super light angst, comfort/no hurt, fluff
The sun was shining bright and warm through the large glass windows and under any other circumstance Yohan probably would have taken a moment to indulge and bask in the wonderful weather but today, Yohan felt like the embodiment of doom. He felt like there was a grey cloud of rain hanging over his head with every breath he took, that inkling of dread that was slowly becoming foreign to him in the last few months because of a certain doe-eyed man seemed to hit him in full force today. He could sense himself spiralling and knew that he needed to get out.
He quickly shuffled out of his chair and headed towards the office door nor really paying attention to his path. Just as he inched close enough to the door to grasp the handle it silently swinged open forcing Yohan to finally look up and pull up his defences. Except the eyes that met his own were ones he’d become familiar with, found comfort in. He let a silent sigh leave his body as he forced a small smile onto his face but the man before him knew better. Kim Ga-On could read Kang Yohan like an open book now, over the last couple of months Ga-On had gradually learned how to read the small micro-expressions Yohan let out and so as Yohan turned around and began retreating back to his desk, he felt himself being pulled back into a soft embrace. It wasn’t a shocking revelation that Ga-On knew exactly how Yohan liked his hugs, the older man had found himself in this comforting hold more often than he would have liked to admit, with Ga-On all his walls came crashing down. With Ga-On there was no where he could hide but he didn’t hate that, he was glad that there was someone he could be vulnerable around, someone he could count on to pull him back up when he felt like he was drowning, he liked to think that this was his gift for making it through the cruel fate and the horrid cards he had been dealt. That if a deity did exist Ga-On was the blessing that adorned his life but he would never openly tell the younger man that.
He didn’t protest as Ga-On pulled back slight to manoeuvre his body so that the two were face-to-face again, he didn’t hide away as Ga-On’s worry filled eyes scanned over his face because with Ga-On he could be Yohan, just Yohan. Ga-On drew him back into the calming hold and this time Yohan let himself melt into the warmth Ga-On’s body provided and seek shelter in the crook over the younger neck. He let himself revel comfort and slowly that sensation of dread, which had been taking over him only a few moments ago, was leaving his being. It was being replaced by an overwhelming amount of love for the man holding him and Yohan felt at ease.
This time it was him pulling away just a little, he let a smile adorn his face, a real one.
“What do you need?” Ga-On whispered tenderly, the softness was something Yohan still needed time to get used to but he appreciated Ga-On for letting him start to getting used to being on the receiving end of that kind of affection.
“I need you.”
Yohan had no more cards in the open, no more schemes or grand plans but it didn’t matter because he was no longer alone, not only did he have this amazing man by his side but he also has a niece, whom he was rebuilding a bond with. A little family, and that was all he could ever ask for.

The pain, I swear. Can someone please shower this man with hugs cause daymnn.
(But like can we just applaud writer Moon cause that man is genius)
Choices and Acceptance
Yohan's lines here make me hurt for him even more, knowing what we do about him after all secrets were revealed. This clip is from episode 12 after the break-up scene. Yohan is extremely emotionally vulnerable here. He tells Min Jung Ho that he didn't have much choice to get to where he is now. He accepted what life threw at him and fought his battles alone.
What breaks my heart here is that Yohan recognises that Gaon's made his own choices in life up to this point. Including what's happened between them so far. He's resigned himself to the fact that Gaon is his own man and will choose his own path going forward, whether it merges with Yohan's or goes against him is anyone's guess. But I think Yohan is both happy for and envious of Gaon here.
His happiness stems from his affection, so he's pleased to know that the man he loves at least has the means in life to make choices when Yohan couldn't. His envy of course comes from the knowledge that at this point Gaon has resolved his grudges related to Doh Young Choon and Cha Kyung Hee and he's got a relatively safe and secure life to look forward to with Soo Hyun by his side. It also doesn't help that once Gaon chooses his old life over Yohan, their paths will never meet.
It's a bittersweet moment for Yohan who can only watch helplessly as Gaon retreats to his life of security while Yohan himself approaches the final stage of his grand plan and his inevitable fall from grace. He's ready to face his end, satisfied that Gaon will live on. Safe and unharmed. Even if it's not at his side.
