anyway i'm going to buck the trend here and say i specifically love these guys way more because of their teeny little arms and feet. ten out of ten design choice, very dainty and endearing
#flight rising#i also think it goes a long way towards de-cluttering their silhouette#which is sorely needed! these things have a lot of doodads!#i think i like all the design elements a lot. only thing i'm not sold on is the horn#still figuring out how to make it work with everything else they've got going on#anyway i really don't see the people complaining these don't feel like light dragons#they're long they're dainty they're vaguely insectoid#they have big horns and lots of frills. their antennae are shaped like filigree!#i think it's just that the art kinda undersells all these features because of how messy it is#okay that's probably the right mix of sugar and salt in the tags. aaand post#my sketches

SO torn about the new breed, because on the one hand they're so cute and i love how round they are, but on the other hand the silhouettes are killing me. they're not the worst offenders, but the m pose in particular is so unnecessary. like this took me five minutes in photoshop to stop all the little doohickeys at the bottom from overlapping
#the breed art reads /so/ much better when it's cleaner! why do we keep having this issue!#sorry this is nitpicky of me but it's such an easy thing to fix for such an immediate improvement#for a piece of art that's gonna be seen at three hundred and fifty pixels across.#flight rising#i do very much enjoy the design though. best feature: their big fat tails

super quick musings on Fathoms. i like a lot about the pose + design, but i feel like they kinda suffer from Undel Sameface when everything about their lore is pointing towards "friendly gentle ocean giants". wanted to roughly sketch Merrigan for a side-by-side comparison, and then some rough doodles of how i might push the design in a chunkier, more cetacean-inspired direction - 3 is swapping the features but keeping the overall proportions/layout mostly the same, and 4 is pushing the proportions even further
#flight rising#obligatory not intended to be negative disclaimer - just sharing thoughts & observations#like it really /feels/ like they wanted to have a friendlier-looking design and then just didn't#although in fairness the breed template has almost certainly been in the works looooong before the event was planned/lore was finalised#like i'm very aware of how long a new modern takes#but yeah sketching this all out side-by-side made me realise that the faces are. really just kinda boring#like the jawline especially. they have Undel Jaw. you all know what i mean when i say that right#(affectionately. etc etc anyway tag ramble over i hope everyone has fun with the new dragons)#REPOST SORRYYY i forgot to tag it the first time lol
