So proud of my mother for doing her own research after I sent her that meme. A sign she hung in her car window.

More than 1/8th of the White Mountain Apache Tribe has tested positive for Covid-19.
They have been hit EXTREMELY hard and I have seen no posts going around talking about it. It is one of the hardest hit places in ARIZONA, a state that already has horribly high case numbers.
They have a Covid relief gofundme. Please donate if you can and spread this if you can't.

Thank you for suffering through that disaster just to recap for us.
If you’re not American and want a recap of the first 20 minutes of the debate:
Trump has already taken a shot at senator Elizabeth warren (MA, D) and called her Pocahontas
The moderator has had to tell trump MULTIPLE TIMES to stop interrupting him and Biden
Biden keeps laughing at trump every time he says something obviously wrong
Trump keeps shouting about socialism
Trump is trying to piss Biden off but he won’t even look at him
Biden deadass just told trump to “just shut up, man”
We haven’t even started COVID talk yay

There’s something insidious about how it’s looked down upon—heavily—when natives try to practice tradition and function independently, despite the laws that hold us down, and we are treated as criminals in a land that we have inhabited for as long as we can remember. That the people who came here and slowly chewed this land down to table scraps are imposing laws that hold us down from maintaining our land, our sovereignty, from eating what we always have, from honoring our animals after death.
It’s painful, knowing you live your life in secret because your oppressor lays down imaginary borders, laws, and ideology, and you are forced to live in it with no regard for your destiny. We live in a world made to fucking control us.

9.25.20. Louisville
Among the 24 protesters arrested last night was Representative Attica Scott, author of Breonna [Taylor’s] Law and the only Black woman on Kentucky’s state legislature. She was arrested while crossing the street past curfew and has been charged with 1st degree rioting. Video evidence shows no rioting by her.
All 4 officers involved in the murder of Breonna Taylor have been cleared of any murder charges by a Kentucky Grand Jury Wednesday.

Guys. This is what absentee ballots are being mailed in.
Pay attention to your mail. If you see Trump on it, as disgusting as this is, don't throw it out. Check it first. This is absolutely appalling.
Check your mail. Make sure you don't throw out your vote on accident because it's got Trump's cheating, lying, racist face on it.

“Navajo Nation — in the “Four Corners” area, with land that borders part of Northeastern Arizona, Southeastern Utah, and Northwestern New Mexico — has been hit hard by COVID-19. So far there are 354 confirmed cases with 15 confirmed deaths. As with much of the nation, the testing picture is incomplete. Navajo Schools stayed open two days longer than non-reservation schools, but the Navajo Nation has taken up strong distancing precautions since then. The Diné have now issued stay-at-home orders and instituted a strict curfew. They’ve also declared a state of emergency.
The seriousness of this response isn’t without precedent. The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1920 was devastating for the Navajo Nation. According to historical records, 12 percent of the population perished, or 3,377 people. So far, COVID-19 has mortality rates anywhere from less than one percent to ten percent or more, depending on a long list of factors. But preparedness seems to be a major determiner and Navajo Nation is woefully ill-equipped to fight off a virus like this. It’s certainly worth noting that 2009’s Swine Flu was four times more deadly in Indian Country than the rest of the U.S.
Diné attorney and leader Ethel Branch has set up the Navajo & Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund on GoFundMe (she also set up a Relief Fund for the Havasupai). This is the fastest and most direct way you can help people right now.
So far the Relief Fund has 2,000 families seeking assistance. The money is going to packages that are being dispatched throughout Navajo Nation. The Guardian reports that each package is filled with “flour, beans, rice, canned soups, dried meat, fever and cough medicine, as well as fresh vegetables, fruit, and meat when available.” These are crucial lifelines for many Diné.
So far, the Navajo & Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund is at about 50 percent of its goal. You can donate directly right here.”

Fun little thing about medieval medicine.
So there’s this old German remedy for getting rid of boils. A mix of eggshells, egg whites, and sulfur rubbed into the boil while reciting the incantation and saying five Paternosters. And according to my prof’s friend (a doctor), it’s all very sensible. The eggshells abrade the skin so the sulfur can sink in and fry the boil. The egg white forms a flexible protective barrier. The incantation and prayers are important because you need to rub it in for a certain amount of time.
It’s easy to take the magic words as superstition, but they’re important.

An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’
Peni Delina Bedard · August 31, 2019 · The serious answer: Here’s what we really think about Trump supporters - the rich, the poor, the malignant and the innocently well-meaning, the ones who think and the ones who don’t… That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought “Fine.” That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, “Okay.” That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, “No problem.” That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, “Not an issue.” That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn’t care, you chirped, “He sure knows me.” That when you heard him illustrate his own character by telling that cute story about the elderly guest bleeding on the floor at his country club, the story about how he turned his back and how it was all an imposition on him, you said, “That’s cool!” That when you saw him mock the disabled, you thought it was the funniest thing you ever saw. That when you heard him brag that he doesn’t read books, you said, “Well, who has time?” That when the Central Park Five were compensated as innocent men convicted of a crime they didn’t commit, and he angrily said that they should still be in prison, you said, “That makes sense.” That when you heard him tell his supporters to beat up protesters and that he would hire attorneys, you thought, “Yes!” That when you heard him tell one rally to confiscate a man’s coat before throwing him out into the freezing cold, you said, “What a great guy!” That you have watched the parade of neo-Nazis and white supremacists with whom he curries favor, while refusing to condemn outright Nazis, and you have said, “Thumbs up!” That you hear him unable to talk to foreign dignitaries without insulting their countries and demanding that they praise his electoral win, you said, “That’s the way I want my President to be.” That you have watched him remove expertise from all layers of government in favor of people who make money off of eliminating protections in the industries they’re supposed to be regulating and you have said, “What a genius!” That you have heard him continue to profit from his businesses, in part by leveraging his position as President, to the point of overcharging the Secret Service for space in the properties he owns, and you have said, “That’s smart!” That you have heard him say that it was difficult to help Puerto Rico because it was in the middle of water and you have said, “That makes sense.” That you have seen him start fights with every country from Canada to New Zealand while praising Russia and quote, “falling in love” with the dictator of North Korea, and you have said, “That’s statesmanship!” That Trump separated children from their families and put them in cages, managed to lose track of 1500 kids, has opened a tent city incarceration camp in the desert in Texas - he explains that they’re just “animals” - and you say, “Well, OK then.” That you have witnessed all the thousand and one other manifestations of corruption and low moral character and outright animalistic rudeness and contempt for you, the working American voter, and you still show up grinning and wearing your MAGA hats and threatening to beat up anybody who says otherwise. What you don’t get, Trump supporters in 2019, is that succumbing to frustration and thinking of you as stupid may be wrong and unhelpful, but it’s also…hear me…charitable. Because if you’re NOT stupid, we must turn to other explanations, and most of them are less flattering.

Americans are so competitive. Even with people that they like. We ought to start a propaganda campaign like “Sweden has a higher voter turnout rate than us! Are you going to let them win?”
“Britain has better class mobility than us and they literally have a queen! Are you gonna let some corporations stop us from being wealthier than the British, you pussy? Vote for politicians that put higher taxes on the rich and we can beat them!”
“The United States has the worst healthcare of anywhere in the world! Are you gonna just stand by and let that happen? Vote for universal healthcare! Make us #1!”
And then put like some explosions and patriotic music in the background. Get some super famous football players to yell it at the screen. People will listen then. Get a skinny white lady in a stars and stripes bikini holding a big gun to sensually say it to the camera. Slowly create a culture where being a conservative makes you a weenie.

A few friendly reminders
-Many wheelchair users can stand or walk short distances. This does not diminish their need for a wheelchair.
-Many deaf/Deaf/heard of hearing people have limited hearing, the ability to speak, lip reading ability, or any combination of the three. They still require proper accommodations for their deafness.
-What a person with sensory issues can handle often varies on a day to day basis. Just because they could handle something a few weeks ago doesn’t mean they’re lying about an inability to do it now.
-The same goes for people with chronic pain or fatigue.
-Just because someone has a learning or developmental disability it does not mean they’re automatically unintelligent. With the proper accommodations and support, many can thrive academically. Some disabilities such as ADHD and autism can even make individuals more suited to certain tasks than neurotypicals.
-Unless you are a doctor with the correct expertise, disabled people most likely know more about their conditions and what accommodations they require than you do.
-Disabled people and communities deserve respect.

There’s a saddening lack of books with pansexual/panromantic rep included in queer book recs, so I’ve compiled a list of books for us pans, that I will be continuously updating.
Some notes: I haven’t read the majority of these books, so I’m trusting the people who sent me recs and the research I’ve done. Some of the books are part of series, and I’m not sure if the pan character is in one or some/all books, so keep that in mind.
For each book I’ve put the genre, the names of the characters if I could find them, if it’s canon or implied/hinted, and a goodreads link.

Yes, they really are that big a deal. Here’s some supporting evidence as to why:
What is old-growth forest?
How much old growth remains in the U.S.?
Study finds old-growth forest burns slower and cooler, preserving habitat
Importance of Old-Growth Forests: Carbon Capture Potential Grows With Age
I love visiting old-growth forests, but I can’t help but get a bit depressed when I have to return to my car and drive through much larger areas that have been logged and subsequently either turned into glorified tree farms, developments, or are struggling to regain some balance in forest succession while also dealing with invasive plant species. There’s nowhere in the lower 48 where I can walk for days through ancient forests that have only experienced minimal interference by humans. While I know that indigenous people have spent centuries, if not millennia, managing their traditional lands, their impact has largely been small compared to that of Americans in the past two centuries.
It’s true that some native species actually thrive better on disturbed land, such as that damaged by periodic forest fires or wind storms. But we have turned so much land into disturbed land, and, worst, heavily developed land, that the balance of ecosystems has been lost. The patchwork of disturbed, recovering, and old growth habitats that evolved over many millennia has been replaced by a human-dominated landscape which is unfit for many species, most especially those adapted to old-growth. This means that it’s even more crucial than ever that we preserve the fragments that remain, both to help the beings that live there as well as there genetic heritage, and to increase our understanding of the intricacy of these increasingly rare habitats.
On a different note, I recognize that not all the species in the sixth panel are found in the same places, but for purposes of illustration please suspend your ecological disbelief for a moment.
Species Portrayed: Western sword fern (Polystichum munitum), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), red tree vole (Arborimus longicaudus), pin lichen (Calcinium quercinum), marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus), northern spotted owl(Strix occidentalis), northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus), lettuce lichen (Lobaria oregana), red-cockaded woodpecker (Leuconotopicus borealis), Humboldt marten (Martes americana humboldtensis), Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia)
