everyone please admire this genital dissection i did today while trying to identify this male longhorn bee. i avoided doing these for the longest time but it really is the only way to reliably ID a huge chunk of bee species. i spent like an hour trying to key this guy out using external morphological features but it only took about 10 seconds once i yanked his crazy little hog out and compared it against the big chart of bee dicks. he's a Eucera amsinckiae.

Koi Dog No. 50
I had to do something extra special for number fifty! I love making koi dogs, and itโs been amazing to see how much everyone else loves them too. Obviously this guy was based on a lionfish (and a lion dog!), but on top of the fancy fins all his markings were actually dyed into the finished surface using silk paints!
This piece is SOLD but Iโll have a bunch of new stuff on my website next friday, 7/26!

[id: a digital drawing of two rats, based on the photo "Neil banging out the tunes," which is of a rat named Neil playing a toy piano. One of the rats is indeed Neil playing his piano, and the other is a rat oc, Beau Bonnie, playing a toy guitar. Rainbow music notes float above them, while text beneath says "banging out the tunes". End id]

Okalivember day 11, parasitoid!
The alarikti, or "comet wasps", are a diverse family of colorful parasitoid wasps.
The twin-tailed alarikti preys on a species of moth, and more specifically its caterpillar. It digs little holes in sandy soil where it drags its prey into after paralyzing it.
The sunset alarikti lays its eggs in the larvae of beetles inside dead, rotting wood. It spends a lot of time inspecting any dead tree it finds until it finds a suitable host.
The darling-faced alarikti is named after its large, cute golden eyes, with pseudopupils that seem to follow you around. It preys on aquatic fly larvae.
The fallen-star alarikti dwells in leaf litter, rarely flying and preferring to hunt on the ground for its larva's meal; a ground beetle.

When things get tough in adulthood, it might seem appealing to return to simpler times. One bizarre marine creature has taken this approach to dire situations quite literally, regressing its physical adult body to a juvenile stage once the stress of starvation or injury has subsided. Until now, the immortal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii) was the only species thought to be able to wind back the clock on jelly-puberty like this, but now it's joined by Mnemiopsis leidyi, better known as the sea walnut or the warty comb jelly.
Contiue Reading.
