one millisecond
i blink and the glowing day disappears,
making way for a cleansing downpour
i blink and the twinkle in your eye goes,
all i see now is a haze of future tears
you blink and they start rolling down,
engraving sadness in your foundation
you blink and see me stumbling away,
in search of a less painful tomorrow
we blinked, and look at the consequences...
now i sleep with one eye open.

the etymology of the word heartbreak
heartbreak (n.)
/ˈhɑːrt.breɪk/
also heart-break, "overwhelming grief, sorrow, sadness or disappointment," 1570s, from heart (n.) + break (n.). Expression break (someone's) heart is from c. 1400.
the title of my poetry collection. i named it after this soulwrenching line in 'Today, Tonight, Tomorrow' by Rachel Lynn Solomon:
"We've had a lot of awkward car rides today, but this one is silent. Neil is staring out the window, chin propped on one hand. I want to play my melancholy music. I want him to tell me the etymology of the word “heartbreak.”"
