That if I disagree on any point then I'm also admitting it's true and inviting for people to draw the offensive imagery they dreamed up over my art like graffiti to 'prove' it??? My unpopular art opinion is that it's great and fun to take months longs breaks where you don't draw anything 👍 but only if it's me. if you do it I'll eat you alive

Uhh okay. My actual unpopular art opinion... I think a lot of people are too quick to jump onto the "ugh you can't copyright a POSE!!!" bandwagon and act like any artist who is uncomfortable with how much another artist has lifted from their style is being 100% unreasonable and self-absorbed. But I see it happening lmao! I've seen artists become popular and then suddenly the stylistic choices they've explored and developed over years are ganked wholesale by other people, and they just have to be... fine with it.

People treat artists on Instagram with like 40k followers the way they'd treat Leyendecker or Musa, as a resource to be copied from, but the fame simply doesn't map. Just because everyone in your group chat recognises who your influences are doesn't mean that's the case universally. That instagram artist is working two jobs and catching public transport and your grandma from Milwaukee doesn't recognise their art by name at a glance. The only kind of art theft people begin to recognise is tracing, and even then only if it aligns 100% - you'll legit have people arguing that something can't be traced because one hand doesn't match up or something - but I believe you absolutely can borrow too heavily from a person's style, even if you aren't perfectly tracing or replicating their stuff.

I think maybe with A/I backlash people are actually gaining more of an appreciation for how much time and work it takes to cultivate an "art style", not just to finish a particular piece. And yes of course there will always be young artists who believe they invented heavily-blushed noses or something and then start drama accusing their friend of "copying their style" because they share one incredibly common trait... but kids will always do that? Kids will also accuse others of plagiarism and tracing and impersonation and it doesn't mean that those concepts become inherently ridiculous and impossible.

I think it's a fine line and I think the solution is to be able to have open discussions about it, but frankly I think the topic is too poisoned. If you start to even float the idea that someone might be borrowing too much from a peer artist's style then you get the artist equivalent of corn-plated OR you run the risk that the other artist will feel so badly that they'll stop making art altogether or something, because the conversation is so high-stakes. I just don't feel like it needs to be!!

I think everyone has had an experience of knowing someone in school who modeled their whole personality around one of the other kids and how obvious it was to everyone... idk why they find it so hard to believe it could be applied to other forms of self expression too. Anyway that's my unpopular art take, that it is totally possible to rip off an artist's work without technically tracing/copying specific pieces, and that you probably should stop treating random artists online who you look up to as if they have the same presence and recognition as your favourite manga author
