I know nobody cares but this is how I worked it out, just going off of major events.
Series starts the same day episode 1 airs, OVA happens the day the last episode aired.
When I was watching Kill La Kill, I always found my self wondering: How many day did the entire story take place? I mean, did all the events happen in two months? Or was it longer? I usually don't think about stuff like this, but Kill La Kill's story moved so quickly that I just got curious.
I generally consider the timeline to be under a year but longer than just a couple of months.
Admittedly, though, it’s a bit difficult to pinpoint. All you really know for sure is that the series lasts over one month (as Ryuko spent one month in a coma between the events of episode 18 and episode 19), but it can’t be longer than a year (considering that the series ends with a school graduation in spring).
After the first few episodes, the exact timing is impossible to figure.
My BreakdownEpisode 1: Takes place across two days: the opening sequence with Gamagoori, and Ryuko’s entrance into Honnouji the day after.
Episode 2: Episode 2 depicts the rest of Ryuko’s first day at Honnouji. She flees from battle and spends the night at the Mankanshoku’s. The rest of the episode takes place the following day and features her tennis match against Omiko. So, by the end of episode 2, the series has covered 3 days.
Episode 3: It’s not stated directly, but it can be assumed that this episode takes place the day after Ryuko’s fight with Omiko. (It’s clearly a new day and Ryuko’s angry attitude at Aikuro implies that this is the first she’s seen him since the tennis match.) Day 4 finishes up with some night sequences and then the episode gets into the next morning with Ryuko and Senketsu’s first big fight against Satsuki. So, we’re up to Day 5 by the end of episode 3.
Episode 4: And here’s where you just can’t tell anymore. Episode 4 only takes place over a day (one morning, really), but it’s impossible to say how much time passed in the space between episode 3 and 4. According to the manga, it’s the next day, but anime-wise, there’s just no telling.
Episode 5: The same can be said for episode 5. Who knows how much time has passed since episode 4? The episode itself covers 2 days (Ryuko’s first encounter with Tsumugu and then their fight the next day), but it’s hard to say how long the series has covered. Still, given that the Mankanshokus are still unaccustomed to Ryuko talking to Senketsu (and Ryuko is still uncomfortable around them), it’s probably safe to say that not too much time has passed.
I’d say about 1.5-2 weeks have passed at the start of the episode.
Episode 6: The first Drama CD takes place after episode 5 and in the middle of? episode 6, and covers at least one week of time itself. So, by the time there are the main events of episode 6 (Ryuko/Senketsu vs. Uzu and Uzu blinding himself afterwards), it’s probably been about 2.5-3.5 weeks in total series time.
Episode 7: Episode 7 has a ton going on. Ryuko and Mako start Fight Club, get rich, move multiple times, and end back where they started. Considering that they get into a sort of routine, I think it’s safe to say that at least 3 weeks pass for this episode.
Additionally, the second Drama CD presumably takes place prior to episode 7 (since it’s only been days since Ryuko/Senketsu and Uzu fought). This means that there’s probably a bit of time between episodes 6 and 7; at least a week, I’d say.
By the end, probably about 1.5-2 months have gone by, at the minimum.
Episode 8: Once more, it’s impossible to say how much time has gone by between episodes 7 and 8. The episode does introduce the Naturals Election, though, which is stated explicitly to be a week long. (The third Drama CD takes place within the time frame of this episode, happening during the Naturals Election.)
It’s hard to say how much time has passed in total by the end of this episode, but I think at least 2 months seems reasonable.
Episodes 9-12: Episodes 9-12 feature Ryuko/Senketsu fighting the Elite Four and Nui. All the fights take place within a day.
At the end of episode 12, a title card notifies the audience that “several days” pass before Ryuko confronts Satsuki about Nui. (Considering she and Senketsu went berserk, she probably spent those “several days” recovering and ran to harass Satsuki as soon as she could get out the door.)
Episode 13: Ryuko’s in a funk. It’s not really clear how long she has been, but we can assume about a week has passed since the berserk incident by the episode’s end if you add on the “several days” she spent recovering and the two days that episode 13 itself covers.
So, we’re looking at at least 2.25-ish months total here.
Episodes 14-17: Episode 14 picks up the day after episode 13, and presumably all happens within a day. Episode 15 continues after that, and episode 16 continues after that. With episode 17′s night scenes, it seems the day episode 14 started ends in episode 17. (Quite a day…)
Episode 17 then has one day of “rest” before the Cultural and Sports Grand Festival, and then ends on the day of the festival. (Meaning that episode 17 covers 3 days.)
Alternatively, episode 14 could happen across multiple days. Still, we’re only looking at that 2.25-2.5-ish months total, at minimum, by the end of episode 17.
Episode 18: Episode 18 continues where episode 17 left off. It’s all within that same day.
Episode 19: Viewers are told a month passes between episodes 18 and 19. (Within that month, Drama CD 4 takes place.) By the end of the episode, then, we’re probably at around 3.5 months total, at the least.
Episodes 20-22: It seems the sun rises at the start of episode 20, marking the start of a day. That day seems to last until episode 22.
Episodes 23-24: The final episodes seem to be night battles on the same night as episode 22 (and the same night of episode 20′s day). (Again, quite a day…) The sun rises again at the end of the final battle.
So, again, about 3.5 months total, at the least, by the time our heroes save the day.
OVA: The OVA takes place 2 weeks after the end of the battle, rounding us up to about 4 months total, at minimum.
Episode 24 Ending: It’s completely uncertain when this takes place.
TLDR: At minimum, it looks like around 4 months pass by the time of the OVA.
However, these are low estimates. There is a lot of wiggle room for time to pass between episodes 3 and 4, between episodes 4 and 5, within episodes 6 and 7, and between episodes 7 and 8. After that the pace picks up considerably and there isn’t a lot of downtime, but you might still sneak some in between episodes 13 and 14.
Personally, I like to think of the series covering around 6-7 months’ worth of time, maybe from September (the start of the second term of school in Japan) to March (the end of the final term). It could also cover a full school year, from April-March, but that means summer vacation would have to fit in there somewhere and I’m not quite sure where…
Whenever the series starts, though, I hold that it definitely ends in March because of the graduation and the cherry blossoms.

thinking about Luffy from the perspective of an everyday schmo in his world is hilarious. And I don’t mean “I heard he was 20 feet tall” etc., though that is still really funny. I mean think about what’s public knowledge on him.
this guy comes out of nowhere, declares war on the fucking government, blows up the centre of their justice system, commits basically the biggest crime you can commit by punching super-royalty and somehow gets away with it, breaks into the most secure prison in the world, and breaks right back out again just to jump feet-first into the biggest war in recent memory, during which you find out oh hey he’s brothers with the pirate king’s kid, his dad’s also trying to overthrow the government, his grandpa’s a war hero who works for said government, and one of the freaking Four Emperors gives him his hat back. A few weeks later he breaks into the headquarters of the world’s biggest military (which is actively hunting him btw) just so he can ring a bell, and Roger’s right hand man is there helping him.
And then he fucking disappears for two years.
Suddenly he comes back, teams up with a Warlord of the Sea to save some country you’ve never heard of by dethroning its king, tries to assassinate one of the Emperors at her own tea party, and then runs away and takes down a completely different Emperor while his friends take out the first one. Here’s his crew:
guy who used to kill pirates for a living
woman who studies ancient deadly superweapons and blew up six ships when she was eight
one of the villains from your comic books
a world-famous rock musician
another Warlord (who’s also some kind of fish monster)
God
also he has a pet raccoon or something and apparently feeds it cotton candy
absolutely buckwild. how do you cope
