So, doing my playthrough of Persona 3 Portable for this video means that I am now on, what, my 7th playthrough of P3 I think?? And as the years have rolled on, I've of course developed my critiques and nitpicks, but all of those qualms always end up overshadowed by how every run, no matter how well planned or considered, inevitably leaves me in a state of emotional desperation.

Like, even if I make (what in the moment feels like) perfect use of my time, there's always Someone. There's always Something. Always one more social link I want to max out, one more quest to complete, one climb through Tarturus I want to complete, but inevitably I slowly yet surely realize that it's not going to happen.

That I have, at last, ran out of time. And then I start bargaining, start planning harder, start trying to micromanage my way out of doom, and that's where the desperation kicks in because all I want, all I've ever wanted from the start was just more time, just more chances to do everything I thought I'd be able to, just more moments with the people I love, just one more day, please please just one more day.

That desperation is wanting to live. And I've yet to find another piece of art that can get that feeling out of me EVERY time I engage with it. It really is something special.

AND IT FITS THE THEMES AND CHARACTERS!!!#every bit of desperation to complete things or to talk to another person to finish a social link and finish quests Elizabeth gives us #Is the same desperation the characters begin to feel #They feel the same clock we feel ticking down; they know their doomsday is coming in the same way we know the game is ending!!!#And that’s so so important for the game itself!! It’s so deeply part of the message!!#And this is the time where Makoto feels the most alive!!
