“I go to The Reform Temple of Forest Hills. Yes, it’s all the way in Forest Hills, but I live in Astoria, so it’s not super far from where I live. It has a really chill vibe, very much LGBTQ affirming. I go a couple times a month, and Rosh Hashanah was amazing this year. And yeah, wedding planning has been taking up a lot of my time.”
“That’s a bit far, but I’d love to go to a service there! Especially if they are LGBTQ affirming. That’s obviously quite important to me.” He grinned, resting his head in his palm. “What has been the hardest part so far?”

Christian went red, unable to help smiling at what his boyfriend said. He slid his hand into Connor’s and lifted it to kiss his knuckles sweetly. “Gross. You’re always so sentimental, sweetheart.” He leaned over to kiss his cheek. “Do birthdays always do this to you?” Chris teased him, mostly to hide how flattered he was. He was so lucky to have someone care so much, to be so kind and gush about him at every possible opportunity. “We might be too full for anything else after cheesecake, but we’ll see.”
Connor smiled as his knuckles were kissed and as his cheek was kissed, and the blush on his face almost matched that of Chris’. “I don’t think I’ve ever been this sentimental for my day of birth. It’s always just been about getting older and hoping the next year won’t cause too much pain. But I made it to here, and I’m nothing but happy now. I haven’t touched drugs in years. I’m living my dream and I have you. Last year, sitting in my little box in Boston, I think I cried most of the day. It’s a stark difference.” He grinned. “I want to be rolling out of there. Filled to the brim with drinks and cheesecake.”

She smiled widely, watching him. “That’s awesome! I wasn’t expecting how many auditions I was going to have to go through. I’m honestly surprised I got this so quickly, but I think they liked that I already knew the musical and I already have a music career under my belt,” she explained. Her eyebrows raised, his offer taking her by surprise. “Really? That’d be amazing, thank you!”
“The grind is really real, especially at first. After graduating school here, I moved up to Boston, cause I couldn’t hack the city yet. It was so overwhelming. I got two great shows up there, and a little film thing, down in Atlanta. And then I moved back here, and it was audition after audition. It’s an insane process, so I completely understand. But keep with it. You would be an incredible Sophie, I can tell!” He smiled sweetly, nodding. “Absolutely! Anything for a fellow musical theatre being.”

“It might have been!” she agreed, pushing her script to the side a bit. She could use a break anyway. When he mentioned Broadway, she immediately remembered where she recognized him from. “That’s right! Pippin, isn’t it? I’ve been auditioning for every Broadway show available since I moved, so my brain is overloaded with Broadway right now. Haven’t seen the show yet, but it’s definitely on my to-do list,” she explained, grinning. “I’m Berry, by the way!”
He grinned, nodding his head. “Yes, indeed! The very same.” He smiled, a glint in his eye. “I know the feeling, my god. It took a while for the Pippin process to even begin! For a while I just felt like I was grasping at straws. Auditions after auditions. But it worked out for me, and it will work for you too!” He chuckled. “It’s lovely to meet you, Berry. I’m Connor, and I’d be happy to give you and a guest some free comp tickets!”

She shook her head, thankful that neither of their coffees had spilled, and no damage seemed to have been done. “Would you like to sit?” she asked, offering up the chair across from her. No one else seemed to be using it and making a friend was always on her to-do list. “You look oddly familiar, do we know each other?” she asked, cocking her head to the side as she got a good look at his face.
He grinned at her question, nodding his head, rather vehemently. “I would love to sit with you! This coffee shop is packed, so maybe it’s fate that I bumped into your chair.” He smiled, taking a seat. “Hmmm, I don’t think we’ve met before. A lot of people think I look familiar... but if you’re particularly into New York politics, or current Broadway shows, I might be a touch familiar.”

He smiled and let out a soft breath, “I guess I should let you get back to partying with the cast” he said softly, “I’ll uh, see you soon, maybe we can have a movie night or something when you get a break from the show?”
Connor gave Bram a soft smile. “Alright. Thanks for coming, Bram. Seriously, means so much to me.” He looked down, but his eyes were still bright. “I would love that so much. We don’t have shows on Sunday nights? We’ll find a movie night then, yeah?”

Berry flipped through the script she had been given at her Mamma Mia! callback. Luckily, she already knew the musical by heart and being the understudy for Sophie was better than nothing. At the very least, she could get her foot in the door, and it would provide enough income to make ends meet. She found herself quietly singing to herself, even though she was in the middle of a coffee shop in Manhattan. Her fingers tapped along as she completely zoned out of reality. Soon, she was jolted out of it as someone bumped into her chair. She looked up, hoping the other was alright. “Jesus! Sorry, didn’t realize my chair was out too far!” she said, quickly scooting her chair a bit closer to her table.
With everything going on, it felt like Connor rarely had any down time. But since his understudy was getting his gig on, Connor had the day off. It almost felt like a blessing, but then, Connor loved his job more than anything in the entire world. He entered the bustling coffee shop, earbuds in, zoning out just a step. He got a cheddar and scallion scone, and an iced coffee with hazelnut and almond milk, but thankfully he got a lid. Because by accident, he bumped into a chair, and was met with a rather apologetic face. “It’s quite alright! Completely my mistake.” He gave her a grin.

“Some weird little vintage store on Greenwich ave. I was trying to pass the time before a meeting and she came right up to me. It’s like I was wearing a sign that said ‘Step right up, see how uncomfortable you can make me today!’” He groaned. “If it offers them, remind me to go back the tenth of never. I was so caught off guard I forgot to say no thank you.”
“Ahhh, I love the weird little vintage stores. Such a mysteriously unique part of this wild and wonderful city.” He mused, if only for a moment, and then came to, grinning at Niko. “Awww, you sweet soul. I’m sure the woman was happy she was able to make you this viscerally uncomfortable. You’ve done a mitzvah!” He couldn’t help chuckling. Niko was just so distraught.

“Yeah, both sets of parents are excited. And yes, I have the venue reserved already, even though it’s not until October 2019. Mom’s also excited for Niagara Falls and to experience Rosh Hashanah services at my temple.”
“Which temple do you go to? I’ve been really bad at going to any services this year, ‘cause my job is an absolute dream, but so very time consuming. And gosh- even a year away, it’s so exciting!”

Chris slid in and gave the address to the driver. “Hopefully I didn’t get your hopes up and then it’s terrible.” He squeezed Connor’s knee with a smile, kissing his cheek. He was comfortably dressed, a light colored polo tucked into some chinos, ready to go out. “Is there anything else you might want on your birthday? Anything special we can do?”
Connor chuckled, looking over at Chris. “I know I sound dreadfully cheesy. But it’s my birthday, so I’ll be as cheesy as I please. Anything with you, literally no matter what, is a good time. I mean, really. We started formally dating... in a hospital. I mean, I wanted to date you the minute you let me steal some of your fries, but... I called you my boyfriend for the first time, in your hospital bed. It could be anywhere, anything. If I’m by your side, I’m happy.” He flushed, totally enamored. “I’m the worst, but I can’t help it. Besotted doesn’t even begin to explain.” He kissed Chris’ cheek. “Well, let’s do this and over dinner I can think about anything else I might want to do.”

“Is there anything more uncomfortable than a random person cornering you in a store and demanding to give you a hand massage? Apparently she could tell how ‘tense’ I was. I was half convinced I was the only one who could see her since no one else seemed bothered by this.” Niko shuddered. “I’m six feet tall and she scared me. Do they make a creepy lady repellent or am I just going crazy?”
Connor couldn’t help the laughter that was bubbling over. “Jesus. Where even were you? What store was it? Did she even work for the store you were in? Does that store normally offer hand massages? I have so any questions!”

Zach grinned. “You would, but you’d do it amazingly, at least.” He pointed out. “The amount of times I’ve had to say ‘no, everyone else has done that before’ is… unfathomable. I know the saying ‘there’s no original ideas any more’ but god!”
“Coming from you, that’s an honor, my friend.” He chuckled. “I can only imagine! But people love taking in the same entertainment, time and time again. It’s absolutely absurd to me! You deserve to be writing whatever your brilliant mind and heart desires!”

Christian grinned, feeling around for his phone to place the call for an Uber. “Oh, sooner than expected. We should get ready. Cheesecake waits for no man.” He leaned over to kiss Connor’s cheek. “C’mon, babe, we’ve got places to go.” He grabbed his cane and helped himself up, a bit more spry than he’d been when they first met, grabbing up his wallet and keys.
Watching Chris, Connor could only grin. What a far way he had come, with his physical therapy, even from the time they met. Connor was so proud, and that was reflected in the beaming smile, plastered on his face. He grabbed his own wallet and keys, finding his phone on the counter. He took Chris’ hand, and kissed him on the cheek. “Best birthday ever.” He chuckled. When they got outside, he opened the car’s door for Chris. “You better be changing my life with this cheesecake. I’m expecting huge things!”

“Do you know how many screenplays I’ve edited that are just a chubby stupid husband and a skinny bombshell ‘nagging’ wife who hate each other? Oh, with three kids- at least one is sarcastic all the time, one is a goody-two-shoes, and the last one is… you guessed it! A rebellious teenager. Those family sitcoms, man. It’s enough to drive me to drink.”
“Jesus, man. I can’t even imagine trying to make that trope seem at all interesting! I mean, I’m sure you do wonderfully. But I’d get so bored! I mean, I get so bored watching shows like that - they’re painfully unrealistic. And... not to mention trying to act in them? You know I’d play the sarcastic daughter’s goofy boyfriend. Ugh.”

“I find it slightly worse. I’m a bit of a restless sleeper.” It was an understatement of Flint’s insomnia. “I wake other people up most of the time.”
“Gotcha, that would be a problem, then.” He chuckles. “I’m sure I wake Chris up all of the time. But I can’t help needing him there. I guess it helps me sleep better knowing he’s close. Can’t explain it, really.”

Chris rolled his eyes. “We’ll get an Uber then?” He asked, kissing Connor’s crown of curls and smiling. “Or does my boyfriend have some fancy driver to come pick us up?” He was only teasing.
Connor chuckles, swatting Chris away. “We will call an Uber, you big goof. I don’t need the most luxurious things in life, all of the time.”
