One thing that really tops off making these scenes so sad or heart-wrenching (like, in general, not just the finale) is in the moments where the voice actors have had to scream/cry out about something.
Like just the past couple episodes alone: Jaune’s cry after Penny died, Winter crying out for Weiss, Blake screaming for Yang, Marrow’s “NO!” when he shielded the others from Watts’s drone, Harriet screaming when she realized Vine was sacrificing himself oh my god
And other times like May yelling for everyone to get to the mines, Penny screaming when Cinder got a big hit in, Willow shouting “ABOVE YOU!” when Weiss was looking for the Hound, I’m probably forgetting some other big ones but you get the point
They feel so real and/or terrified and painful to hear, and it really tops off whatever moment it’s suppose to accentuate so well. For real, props to the VAs

So you know what this means, right?
Raven had one awkward conversation with the previous Spring Maiden.

Something that was really interesting to see was Winter breaking down as soon as Weiss fell into the void. It really shows just how much Winter loves Weiss.
From her desperate attempt to save her from Cinders attack,
to the anguish in her voice when she falls,
to the realization that she just lost her sister (try not to think about how 2 episodes she finally "got in touch with Weiss" which she admits she should've done ages ago.)
You dont even need to see her face to know how defeated she's feeling her posture alone speaks volumes,
she goes from the strong and stoic woman that we've seen for several volumes to seeing her in a state of dismay,
her sadness does an immediate 180 and goes right into anger,
(Try not to think about Winter blaming herself for Weiss's 'death.' Seriously I'm warning you, it'll make you sad.)
*feral mode activated*
I have no doubt Winter would've killed Cinder if time was on her side.
THIS SCENE BROKE ME. Not ready for whatever this conversation is going to look like or what each one of their reactions will be. Or if it'll even happen. But despite being a VERY dysfunctional family, you can tell that they all love each other a lot. Cant wait for them to work their shit out. (Dont think about the fact that Weiss brought her family together and wont be there (at least at this moment) to see that.)
This finale broke me

Also I feel so much for Winter right now.
In 5 minutes, she just lost both of her little sisters
The way her voice breaks while screaming Weiss’ name… I have a sister, an older one instead of a younger one, true, but still a sister, and I can imagine so well the pain Winter was feeling
The grief is so great she can barely fly herself back on the bridge before collapsing
And now she can barely look her mother and brother in the eye
She can’t bear the thought of having to announce that Weiss is never coming back
Instead she throws herself in the fight, she puts all her energy in doing something other than thinking about what she’s just lost and her grief.
I hope team RWBY+J’s trip doesn’t last for months in Remnant, because I am not sure in what state they will find Winter (and their friends) when they come back if it does.

This was gut wrenching. For two minutes Weiss thought her entire family was dead. And she still kept fighting.
