Consensual sex can still be upsetting or even traumatic. It is valid if you feel upset or traumatized even if the person you were with did nothing wrong. It’s okay to admit that. Consensual sex isn’t always great. It’s also okay if you didn’t notice it was upsetting until after it was over.

I want you to know that you’re valid. Your feelings are valid. And it’s okay to feel upset.

I hope you are good.

I heard one of the songs we used to sing together in your car on the way home from school that year. I immediately started singing my harmony, imagining Jason Mraz’s voice as your own. I closed my eyes and was instantly transported back to the front seat of your red pt cruiser, sitting in my driveway so we could finish the last verse. I felt your hand on mine, gently rubbing the soft skin above my thumb. I saw the sharp angle of your nose, your jaw. I could see the long lashes of your closed eyes while you sang about how much you loved me.

You were a true friend to me. You were the one I couldn’t stop going back to. Neither of was willing to give up and so we just kept trying “one more time” until you finally walked away for good all after a misunderstanding. I think we might have been beautiful if only we’d been a little braver, a little more mature.

Now we are both married with our families and it’s all okay. But I just wanted someone in the world, if not you, to know that I sang through all of our songs today. I let myself reminisce our high-school love for a little bit, and then I wished you well and let it go.

it really is insane how waking up early will grant you access to some of the most beautiful sights and sensations in the world that will make you want to live forever, but only if you overcome the gauntlet of a thousand razors that is getting out of bed early. truly one of life's little saw traps.
