2020 IS THE BEGINNING OF UNDERTALE

I just wanted to clear up some misconceptions about 2019 being the last year that Undertale could have taken place and that anyone could fall down.

Here we have the opening cutscene, it says 201X. But this isn’t when the events of the game occur.

In the next scene we see a fallen human, but this is not Frisk, this is Chara, the first fallen child. Notice there are no Golden flowers yet to break their fall.

This scene is also continued later during the Asriel fight, and it shows that the human that fell in 201X during the opening cutscene was in fact Chara, not Frisk.

Furthermore, during the Pacifist Route, in New Home there is an OLD calendar from the END of 201X with a date circled on it.

During the Genocide Route when Chara’s personality begins commenting on things, they say “The date I came here.” when you check this calendar. Remember the Dreemurrs lived in the ruins for a time before moving to New Home, and while this date could reference that move, regardless, we can confidently say that Chara fell into the Underground sometime in 201X.

Now here’s the important part:

The dates that the other fallen children and Frisk fell are never explicitly stated in game, but there are some hints as to how long it’s been since Chara died.

After the Asriel fight, he says Chara has been gone for a “long time”.

While sans is talking about practicing knock-knock jokes with Toriel from behind the door, he offhandedly says that it seems like his joke was the best she’s heard in a “hundred years”, and we know how perceptive sans is. Remember, Toriel has been in exile since Chara and Asriel passed and most monsters around now have never seen her.

So in Summary,

Chara fell in 201X, but the other fallen children and the actual events of Undertale as Frisk happen an unknown amount of time after that date, and could easily go into 20XX (or even 21XX if sans remark is anything to go by).

Undertale is just beginning.

I’m sure many of you are intuitive enough to have seen this coming. After almost three years of production and a variety of adjustments to keep Caretaker running, this project has lost its momentum and has come to an early, quiet, and inevitable end.

When we originally kicked this story off, we predicted we could get it finished in a couple of years, maybe three if we took our time. How optimistic we were! From where we left off, we are only about halfway through our story, meaning we have 2-3 more years left of work ahead of us. And, as the energy in the Undertale fandom has begun to dwindle, so has the fuel that has propelled us thus far: our motivation! Without this we have to accept that all good things must come to an end, and we’d prefer to put our creative energy towards our jobs, education, and other personal pursuits. It’s not without a bit of heartbreak—after all, we really love our story and still would love to see it through to the end—but at this point the benefits of closing this fan project are worth the bittersweet goodbye.

We’d like to extend a huge thanks to you, our readers, who have given us your enthusiasm, theories, and well wishes over the years. An additional thanks goes to the content creators that have sent in fanart, fanfic, fandubs, and yes, even the memes that brightened our days. And of course, we are so grateful to every person that donated to our ko-fi or patreon. Your generosity was tantamount in replacing broken hardware and saved us in some emergencies.

What’s next?

While the comic is officially over, we will be sharing a written plot summary that reveals what horrible tragedies would have befallen Frisk and Chara, as well as the thrilling conclusion to the story. Alongside the summary will be early concept art of scenes that could have been. The spoiler ban is officially lifting, so feel free to ask any of your lingering questions! Also, we are still going to post the promised ko-fi art, so stay tuned for that! Every remaining piece is in progress, we just need to get them finished.

As much as I love Toriel and Asgore, I think a dangerous trait of theirs that remains consistent across both universes is that they have a tendency to pretend everything is okay when it really, really isn’t.

In Undertale, Chara, a human who climbs The Mountain of Disappearance and Death, only seems to have one person who inquires why they did so, and that’s Asriel. He’s the only one they confide in, and he’s also a kid, so he’s unequipped to deal with that or their later martyr complex.

An adult would have been able to step in, been better able to help them cope with their depression, and assure them that killing themselves is not the best way to “become the future of humans and monsters”, as Asgore so wanted and expected them to be.

In Deltarune, Kris and Susie are both isolated from their peers, don’t seem to be eating enough at all, and are openly criticized by people from the town to their faces (for either being “creepy” or for “having a disgusting outfit”). Susie even seems to be convinced the school is going to expel her for eating chalk, that everyone wants her to be, and wonders why anyone would want to be her friend, even though MK admits they’ve never actually seen her beat up anyone.

Toriel is nice to both of them, but no effort seems to be made to get to the bottom of these issues, i.e make sure they’re both getting 3 square meals (which neither of them are) and that the school makes a greater effort to be a non-hostile environment. And that they’re given better coping mechanisms for what seems like depression other than, like, yeeting their soul or threatening people’s faces.

Hometown seems to dress itself up as a utopian monster society, but it’s got two kids getting left completely behind, one man nearly homeless, a girl who’s too afraid to ask her mom to give her the housekey, and Alphys apparently already spending most of her time in an alleyway. And something needs to change soon, because if UT showed us anything it’s that nothing good happens when you ignore problems like that for long enough.
